Horford helps Hawks top Wizards in OT

Dec 14, 2013 - 4:14 AM Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Al Horford tied a career-high with 34 points, including the game-winning jumper as time expired in overtime, and the Atlanta Hawks defeated the Washington Wizards for the 11th straight time at Philips Arena, 101-99, on Friday night.

Paul Millsap scored 16 points with 11 rebounds, Kyle Korver also netted 16, and Jeff Teague added 12 points and seven assists.

Atlanta finished its four-game homestand with a 3-1 mark.

Trevor Booker had 24 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, while Martell Webster and John Wall scored 15 and 13, respectively, for Washington, which hasn't won in Atlanta since Jan. 11, 2008.

Marcin Gortat registered a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds in the setback. Washington has lost three straight games.

Trevor Ariza hit a triple to put Washington up 93-92 with 2:12 to go in the extra session and Korver answered with a three of his own to put Atlanta back in front.

Teague then hit a floater on the following possession to extend the lead to four with 1:24 to play.

Booker hit back-to-back jumpers around a Teague basket to cut the deficit to 99-97. Shelvin Mack missed a three-point heave with 12.9 seconds left and Booker wrestled in the rebound to give Washington another chance.

Wall drove the lane and dropped it off to Booker, who went up and under for a clutch reverse layup to tie the game with 1.8 seconds left.

After a timeout, Pero Antic lobbed the inbounds pass cross-court to Horford, who caught the ball on the baseline and buried a 10-foot jumper as time expired.

"We work on that in practice," Horford said of the final play. "That's a play we worked on and we have three options. Pero saw me and he gave me a great pass. As soon as I caught it, I shot it."

Early in the fourth quarter, Atlanta went on a 7-0 burst to extend its lead to a game-high 15.

Washington responded with a 18-2 surge that Wall capped with a pull-up jumper to take an 83-82 advantage with 2:14 left in regulation.

Horford's dunk put a close on the run and also put the Hawks back in front, but Wall answered at the other end with a deep three.

In a frantic final seconds, Mack's tying layup attempt was off the mark but Korver grabbed a long rebound to maintain possession. Horford was fouled with 5.5 seconds left and hit both free throws to tie the game at 86.

Wall's jumper was contested by DeMarre Carroll and hit nothing but air as the buzzer sounded.

"For 42 minutes we didn't do anything," said Washington head coach Randy Wittman. "We would have gotten more to stay home and practice. For the last eight minutes, I'll give them credit for coming back. When you don't come to play, you leave yourself no leeway."

Horford scored Atlanta's first five points of the third quarter to help the Hawks to a 12-4 run which Korver capped with a jumper at 8:02.

Carroll added a 3-pointer soon after to extend the Hawks advantage to 62-52 and Atlanta maintained a 10-point lead heading to the fourth.

Atlanta led 21-19 after one quarter and brought a two-point lead into the locker room at half.
