Wizards try to solve issues in Atlanta
Dec 13, 2013 - 3:43 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Two Southwest Division rivals try to get back into the win column Friday night when the Washington Wizards visit Philips Arena to meet the Atlanta Hawks. The Hawks had a two-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday when they fell at home to the Oklahoma City Thunder, 101-92. That was the third of a four-game homestand, and after the Hawks visit Madison Square Garden on Saturday, they come back for three more at home.
Against the Thunder, Atlanta fell eight behind at the half and couldn't threaten OKC.
"I thought defensively we played hard," said sharp-shooter Kyle Korver. "I thought we had our moments. We just had a couple of stretches during the game, we're just killing ourselves."
Korver extended his NBA record for consecutive games with a made 3-pointer to 91. He only had nine points on Tuesday. Paul Millsap led the way for Atlanta with 23 points and 12 rebounds.
Jeff Teague and Shelvin Mack both finished with 17 points. Al Horford only managed seven points, but pulled down 10 boards.
The Wizards have lost two in straight in their bid to get over .500. Both losses came at home and the Wiz play five of their next six outside our nation's capital.
On Monday, Washington fell to the Denver Nuggets, 75-74. Denver's Kenneth Faried came up with a huge block on John Wall as he attempted a layup with 39.9 seconds left. Faried then hustled down court and slammed the ball home to put Denver up 75-74.
The Wizards were unable to answer.
Washington, which was with Nene (right foot) and Martell Webster (left ankle), only scored 29 points in the second half, a season-low.
Wall led the way with 20 points, followed by 16 from Marcin Gortat, 14 from Trevor Ariza and 12 from Trevor Booker.
Webster is expected to play Friday, barring any setbacks. Nene is questionable, but the Wizards did receive some encouraging news on the injury front. Bradley Beal, who has been out with a stress injury to his proximal right fibula, increased his basketball activities, starting with Wednesday's practice.
"I did a lot of half court stuff today. The doc and my trainers don't want me to go full court, or up and down as much," said Beal. I got into some drills that were pretty live in the half court. Just getting used to cutting, curling, just doing little drills like that. Competing a little bit, getting my wind back."
The Wizards defeated the Hawks in Washington on Nov. 30, 108-101. That was two wins in a row over Atlanta, but the Wiz have dropped 10 consecutive games in Philips Arena.
