Crawford's 37 boosts Clippers to win; Ross' 51 ties Toronto mark
Jan 26, 2014 - 5:23 AM Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Jamal Crawford scored a season-high 37 points with 11 assists to spoil Terrence Ross' career night as the Los Angeles Clippers beat the Toronto Raptors, 126-118, at Air Canada Centre.Crawford's output was overshadowed by a memorable performance from Ross, who tied Vince Carter's franchise record with a career-high 51 points on 10-of-17 shooting from 3-point range.
Ross set the club record for 3s in a half by canning seven in the first two quarters and added to that mark in the second half, scoring a total of 28 points in the third and fourth quarters after DeMar DeRozan exited the game with a sprained left foot.
Blake Griffin tallied 30 points, J.J. Redick contributed 18, and Darren Collison added 12 for the Clippers, winners in two straight.
Jonas Valanciunas and Kyle Lowry each deposited double-doubles. Valanciunas recorded 17 points and 12 rebounds, and Lowry finished with 11 points and 12 assists for Toronto, which had its two-game winning streak overall and four- game home winning streak over the Clippers snapped in the setback.
Matt Barnes hit two 3s to open up the third quarter and extend Los Angeles' halftime lead to 77-65.
Ross then capped a 13-0 run with a pair of high-flying dunks to give Toronto the lead. Lowry was off the mark on a 3 from the corner and Ross came flying in to dunk the miss. He followed that with an alley-oop from Lowry to get the Toronto faithful on their feet.
Los Angeles quickly regained a five-point lead, but the Raptors worked their way back in large part to Ross.
Crawford put the Clippers up three with 9.9 seconds left and Ross nailed a triple at the buzzer to tie the game at 93-93 heading into the fourth.
Ross took over right where he left off to begin the fourth as he scored Toronto's first seven points in the frame and tied the game at 100-100 with a 3.
Ross then hit a trey to give Toronto a 105-102 lead, but Redick scored five points during an 11-3 run to give the Clippers a 117-108 lead with 3:55 minutes left.
Lowry made just 1-of-3 free throws at 1:50 to cut the deficit to eight, but Redick buried a 3 with 56.9 seconds left to make it 124-113 and seal it for LA.
"I guess we left the defense when we were at customs," Clippers coach Doc Rivers said of the trip to Canada. "Before the game I must have put a jinx on it. I asked who the shooters were on the Toronto team and they said everybody but Ross. He was everything. He's not just a dunker, he's a shooter."
Ross stepped to the line with 4.1 seconds left and the career mark in his sights, but he split the pair to tie the record instead of taking sole possession.
"I don't think about anything like that until the game is over," Ross said of Carter's record.
Toronto led 37-36 after one quarter as Ross knocked down one of his five first quarter 3s with .9 seconds left and the Raptors trailed 71-65 at the break.
"When you can absorb a 50 and win, it's great," added Rivers. "It was a shooter's game. I reminded me of an ABA game."
