Marc Gasol, Grizzlies hold off Lakers

Feb 27, 2014 - 5:35 AM Memphis, TN (SportsNetwork.com) - Marc Gasol registered 14 points, 12 rebounds and five assists to best his brother's team as the Memphis Grizzlies topped the Los Angeles Lakers, 108-103, at FedExForum.

Courtney Lee had 18 points and Tony Allen scored 17 in a reserve role for Memphis, which raced to a 22-point lead midway through the third quarter before holding on in the waning minute.

"I like the way we stuck together," Allen said of his team hanging on down the stretch. "We finished it out."

Gasol's older brother, Pau, ended with 17 points and 10 boards for the Lakers, who fell 20 games under .500 (19-39) with their seventh loss in eight games. Jodie Meeks scored 19 and Wesley Johnson 18 in defeat.

The Grizzlies, who won for the fifth time in six contests, got 14 points from James Johnson and 13 from Zach Randolph.

Randolph's jumper widened Memphis' lead to 76-54 with 6:02 left in the third quarter, but the Lakers were within 82-73 going to the fourth. Meeks had 11 of his points in the third.

Jordan Farmar, who scored 11 of his 16 points in the final quarter, got the Lakers within 106-103 by draining a long 3-pointer with 14.9 seconds left.

Lee countered with a pair at the charity stripe to seal the outcome, as Memphis nearly blew a 15-point lead with just over six minutes remaining.

"We can be a solid team," Farmar remarked. "We can compete every night to win. We're right there at the end of the game with a chance."

The hosts scored the final seven points of the opening quarter for a 31-23 lead. Memphis shot 16-of-27 in the second to gain a 65-46 halftime cushion.

The Lakers played without Steve Nash (nerve root irritation), Nick Young (sore knee) and Chris Kaman (sore back) ... Kent Bazemore and MarShon Brooks both scored 14 for LA, which was 15-of-28 from 3-point range ... Memphis is 15-5 since Marc Gasol returned after missing 23 games with a left MCL sprain.
