Grizzlies welcome sagging Lakers to Beale Street
Feb 26, 2014 - 3:38 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Memphis Grizzlies will continue their push toward a playoff spot when they host the Los Angeles Lakers Wednesday at FedExForum. The well-rested Grizzlies are just 1 1/2 games off the pace for a postseason berth and recently sustained a 92-89 loss at Charlotte on Saturday.
Memphis point guard Mike Conley finished with 16 points, five assists and five boards, while Zach Randolph added 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Grizzlies, who had their four-game winning streak snapped.
"We wanted to win, but the Charlotte Bobcats were the aggressors," Grizzlies guard Tony Allen said.
After the Bobcats took an 82-69 lead, the Grizzlies crawled back and eventually went ahead 87-86 on a Conley jump shot with 50.7 seconds left. Charlotte sealed the victory from the foul line and Conley missed two shots from beyond the arc in the waning moments.
Memphis has won three in a row at home and has a 16-14 record on Beale Street this season. It will visit Oklahoma City next on Friday.
Los Angeles has lost two in a row and six of seven games, including Tuesday's 118-98 setback at the hands of the Indiana Pacers.
Kent Bazemore scored a career-high 23 points for the Lakers and has impressed head coach Mike D'Antoni.
"I think he can play," D'Antoni said of Bazemore. "Defensively, especially, he's very good at doubling. He's very good at reading stuff and he's a pretty good one-on-one defender. He does a lot of stuff."
Bazemore was part of a three-player deal with Golden State last week.
Wesley Johnson (15), Pau Gasol (13), Jodie Meeks (13) and MarShon Brooks (11) rounded out the double-digit scorers for the lowly Lakers.
The Lakers have won only five game since Jan. 5 and own a 10-20 mark as the visitor this season. Oft-injured guard Steve Nash (back) is questionable against the Grizzlies
L.A. and Memphis have split two games this season, while the Lakers have won eight of the last 12 encounters at the Grizzlies.
