Wade leads Heat to overtime win over Kings

Dec 8, 2006 - 6:54 AM SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- Dwyane Wade fell one assist short of a triple-double, but his effort on the other end of the court preserved a victory.

Wade collected 32 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists and carried his squad in overtime as the Miami Heat edged the Sacramento Kings, 93-91.

Jason Williams and Gary Payton scored 11 points apiece for Miami, which shot 43 percent (36-of-83) from the field and received double-figure scoring from five players.

The reigning NBA Finals MVP, Wade is used to performing in crunch time. He shot 13-of-27 from the floor and came up big in the overtime period, scoring seven of Miami's eight points.

"I didn't know at all (about the triple-double)," Wade said. "I didn't even know how many points I'd scored. I was just out there trying to do what I can to, first of all, get over my weakness (from wisdom tooth soreness), and second of all, to help my teammates win the game. At the end of the game, I was shocked to see the whole statistic line."

Trailing, 92-85, with 2:25 left, the Kings went on a 6-0 run to make it 92-91 with 35 seconds remaining. After Wade's missed jumper on the ensuing possession, Mike Bibby grabbed the long rebound and raced the other way but missed an acrobatic layup with Wade contesting the shot from behind.

"It was a harrowing finish for us," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "I thought we played extremely well after the first five minutes of the game, kept the tempo, I think, to our pace and didn't take a whole lot of bad shots. Got some good performances the second half from some guys. It was a solid win, but we almost gave it away at the end."

Udonis Haslem grabbed the rebound with six-tenths of a second remaining to seal the victory.

"What is there to talk about? I thought for sure I was going to get (the foul called)," Bibby said. "I tried to get the shot up and my arm came down and I looked for the call."

Sacramento used an impressive spurt at the end of regulation to send the game to overtime. Trailing, 83-71, with 3:59 left, the Kings went on a 14-2 run to close out regulation with the game tied, 85-85. On the final possession, Wade missed an off-balance jumper as time expired.

"We started to shoot some shots we weren't shooting all game - quick shots and 3-pointers," Wade said. "They weren't going in and they were able to come back and score real quick and also score with time not moving on the free-throw line. That kept them in the game and brought them back into it."

Despite having allowed the Kings to pull even, Wade felt he could have ended it on the final play.

"I had a good look, but it didn't go in for me," Wade said. "We didn't lose the game on that shot, so I just went back to the huddle, got regrouped and came back. Coach came to me the first couple plays, so I wanted get it going and get us the lead early on and have them try to fight back."

After winning two of the first three on their four-game road swing, the Heat end the trip at Denver on Friday.

"We've been playing well of late, we've dropped some close games," Wade said. "As long as we continue to play together, continue to play (all) out, it doesn't matter with this team. We're going to go out there in Denver, a place I've never won at, and hopefully try to put together a good game."

Bibby scored 20 points and Ron Artest and Brad Miller added 15 apiece for Sacramento, which shot just 36 percent (30-of-83) in dropping its fifth straight game.

"It's not often you can shoot 36 percent and come within two points of winning a basketball game, and the game goes into overtime," Kings coach Eric Mussleman said.
