Aldridge helps Blazers beat Nuggets

Nov 10, 2014 - 6:46 AM Portland, OR (SportsNetwork.com) - LaMarcus Aldridge had 28 points and nine rebounds in the Portland Trail Blazers' 116-100 victory over the Denver Nuggets on Sunday.

Wesley Matthews added 21 points and six boards for the Blazers, who improved to 4-3 on the young season. Robin Lopez and Chris Kaman each tallied 12 points.

"It was a good win," Matthews said. "I think we did a good job, especially in the second half."

Kenneth Faried ended with 19 points, seven rebounds and three blocks for the Nuggets (1-5), who have lost five in a row. Arron Afflalo and Ty Lawson each donated 18 points.

"It was a battle of who could get the most offensive boards and make the most of opportunities when they got them," said Faried.

Ahead 26-25, the Blazers ended the first quarter on a 10-2 run. Kaman tallied seven points during the surge that Steve Blake capped with a 3-pointer for a 36-27 margin.

Denver got within 41-39 before Portland went on a 14-4 run. Aldridge tallied six points during the spurt to help the home team build a 55-43 margin. It was a 64-56 game at the half.

The Nuggets cut the gap to three early in the third quarter, but Aldridge's 3- pointer and jumper made it 69-61.

The Blazers led by as many as 14 in the third and took an 85-73 lead into the fourth.

Denver never got closer than eight in the final frame.

Damian Lillard and Nicolas Batum had 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Blazers, who went 16-of-31 from beyond the arc ... Denver went 23-of-30 from the foul line ... Lawson returned to the lineup after missing one game with an ankle injury ... Portland has won five straight against the Nuggets ... Denver center J.J. Hickson had eight points and 10 rebounds in his first game back since tearing his ACL last season. He began the season serving a five-game suspension.
