Carter leads Nets to another tight win over Heat in Europe
Oct 12, 2008 - 9:12 PM LONDON (Ticker) -- Vince Carter gave an early sign of the leadership that he will provide for the young New Jersey Nets, scoring five points in the final minute to secure a 94-92 victory over the Miami Heat in a NBA Europe Live preseason matchup on Sunday.Carter went on to finish with 19 points for New Jersey, which beat Miami for the second straight time after posting a 100-98 overtime victory in Paris on Thursday.
In another tight affair, Carter snapped an 86-86 tie with 50 seconds left on a turnaround jumper in the lane. After Yi Jianlian blocked a shot by Miami's Joel Anthony on the other end, Carter looked to add to the lead with another jumper.
Although Carter missed, the Nets' young front line of Yi and Brook Lopez hit the glass, with the rookie from Stanford getting credit for the tip and a 90-86 advantage with 18 seconds left.
After Dwyane Wade and New Jersey's Devin Harris both split a pair of free throws, Miami closed within 91-89 when Shawn Marion tipped in a missed layup by Wade with 9.7 ticks remaining.
Carter calmly sank two attempts from the stripe moments later before the Heat got a bit of luck, as Marcus Banks' deep 3-pointer from the right wing banked in off the glass to cut Miami's deficit to 93-92 with 4.7 seconds to play.
Carter, who finished 9-of-10 on free throws, was sent back to the line, making the first of two for a two-point edge. The swingman could not covert the second, but Marion fumbled the rebound out of bounds, enabling the Nets to run out the clock.
Acquired in an offseason trade with Milwaukee for Richard Jefferson, Yi ended up with 17 points and Harris added 14.
Banks led the Heat with 19 points and Wade had 18, seven assists and six rebounds.
Michael Beasley, the second overall pick in June's draft for Miami, recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards.
