Ellis nails game-winning shot as Warriors top Nets

Jan 25, 2007 - 8:25 AM OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- Monta Ellis' sweet stroke continued the New Jersey Nets' sour road trip.

Ellis nailed a long jumper as time expired and newcomer Al Harrington scored 29 points as the Golden State Warriors used a frenetic fourth-quarter comeback en route to a dramatic 110-109 victory over the Nets.

Ellis netted 20 points for Golden State, which won its first game since acquiring Harrington, guards Stephen Jackson and Sarunas Jasikevicius and forward Josh Powell in a huge eight-player deal with Indiana on Wednesday.

"A great, great feeling. This homestand is only two games, but I really feel like it's key for us to win both of these games and gain some confidence as we head to the east," Harrington said. "It's still going to take some time (to assimilate the new players). I think defensively that's the biggest thing.

"We have to learn to trust one another and know that we have each other's back. I think the better we develop on that end, the better the team will be."

Just two days after squandering a 20-point lead in an 88-87 loss to Sacramento, the Nets blew a 12-point fourth-quarter advantage against the Warriors to drop their 10th consecutive game on the West Coast - six this season.

"It's 82 games, things are going to happen, and you've got to know how to bounce back," New Jersey guard Marcus Williams said. "The last two games we went into the fourth quarter with a lead and lost it. I think going into the Clippers game our focus is going to be, 'You've got a lead in the fourth quarter, you've got to maintain it.'"

On the final sequence, New Jersey's Bostjan Nachbar missed a 3-pointer from the left corner with six seconds left.

"We always want to get (Vince Carter) the shot first and then we knew he was going to the draw defense, and the coach put me in the corner," Nachbar said. "I had a wide-open look, so honestly, I saw that ball going in. So, I missed it. I'm trying to forget about it already because we've got a new game (Thursday)."

Baron Davis then snared the rebound, pushed the ball without calling timeout and dished on the left wing to Ellis, who drained the wide-open shot that sparked a wild celebration.

"It feels good. I knew it was going to go in when it left my hand," Ellis said. "I was kind of off tonight, but Baron gave it to me, and I came through in the clutch. I saw five seconds left on the clock, and when the defense stepped up, I knew Baron was coming to me. I thought about shooting the (3-pointer), but I knew we were only down one, so I stepped in and hit the (two)."

"When I got the rebound, in a situation like that, knowing that we have enough time," Davis said. "I looked up and saw Al streaking and it was a 3-on-2 break. Kidd went to Al and Williams stepped up and Monta was right there for a good fast-break jump shot."

Golden State struggled for most of the contest but finished the fourth quarter on a 17-5 run to secure the victory. Harrington scored seven points during the spurt and Davis added six.

"You're allowed to be disappointed tonight," Nets coach Lawrence Frank said. "The bottom line is when you're on the road, you try to put yourself in position to win the game. Unfortunately, the last two nights we did that but lost. But you've got to keep on moving forward."

In just his third game with his new team, Harrington went 10-of-14 from the field, including 2-of-4 from the arc. Davis scored 18 points on just 6-of-20 shooting but dished out 10 assists.

Jason Kidd collected 26 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds for the Nets, who shot 51 percent (40-of-78). After dropping the first two games on its five-game road trip, New Jersey will look to bounce back against the Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday.

Frank tried to stay positive but pointed to his team's sloppy play as a reason for the loss.

"We were up one with 29 seconds," Frank said. "We gave ourselves a good position to win the game, but we didn't. Of course, we had 22 turnovers, which turned into 29 points and that didn't help. But with that being said, we still had the lead with 29 seconds left, and we still lost."
