Cassell leads Clippers past 76ers

Feb 10, 2007 - 6:05 AM PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- Sam Cassell put an end to the Los Angeles Clippers' most recent road woes.

Cassell scored 22 points off the bench to lead the Clippers to a 90-89 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers, snapping their three-game losing streak in the process.

Shaun Livingston snapped an 83-83 tie on a jumper with 56 seconds left in the game, giving Los Angeles the lead for good. Elton Brand came down on the next possession and nailed a spinning layup over Samuel Dalembert to extend the lead to 87-83.

Chris Kaman split a pair of free throws with five seconds remaining for a 90-87 edge, but Philadelphia's Andre Iguodala missed an off-balance 3-pointer while guarded by Kaman three seconds later. Dalembert converted the miss as time expired.

"It builds confidence; that's what we needed," Brand said. "It's about winning ballgames and it's tough to win on the road. We've had our problems on the road and to win one like this, coming from behind it gives us confidence and that's what we need right now."

Cuttino Mobley scored 17 points and Kaman added 15 and nine rebounds for the Clippers, who shot 44 percent (34-of-77), including 5-of-10 from 3-point range.

Cassell capped an 11-2 spurt on a 3-pointer with 9:15 remaining in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 68-68. The Clippers were down by as much as 13 points in the third.

"I just gave my team a lift," Cassell said. "That's all I'm supposed to do. It's nothing spectacular. We needed it. I made some baskets and give some credit to my teammates. It shows our team character and chemistry. Guys stepped it and that's how we won the game."

"We started out with probably our best defensive lineup on the floor (Quinton Ross, Livingston, Kaman, Mobley, and Brand)," Los Angeles coach Mike Dunleavy said. "I thought our guys did a good job keeping the tempo right for us and doing what we needed to do.

"Sam came in and gave us some scoring, which is what we were hoping for. Doug (Christie) was solid defensively and made good plays. Kaman was strong around the basket for us."

Iguodala scored 22 points and Dalembert netted 14 and grabbed 15 rebounds for the 76ers, who shot 42 percent (33-of-78).

"It is just a matter of guys wanting to go out there and win, and wanting to win and really believing," Iguodala said. "Now, we are to a point where if the other team scores and we're down one, we don't want to take a timeout.

"Guys are like, 'Come on. We're going to get the ball back in and go down and score.' Obviously, we take the timeout, but we feel like we can score whenever we want."

Los Angeles snapped a nine-game losing streak at the Wachovia Center. Its previous win came on March 10, 1996.
