Lewis helps Sonics rally from 25 down to edge Timberwolves

Mar 28, 2007 - 4:41 AM MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- For the second time in five days, the Minnesota Timberwolves had no fourth-quarter answer for Rashard Lewis.

Lewis scored 21 of his 35 points in the fourth quarter as the Seattle SuperSonics rallied from 25 points down for a 114-106 triumph over the Timberwolves.

On Friday, Lewis scored 13 fourth-quarter points to help Seattle battle from a nine-point deficit with four minutes left in the final period for an 85-82 victory at Key Arena.

In the opening half in this matchup, the Timberwolves shot a blistering 60 percent (28-of-46) from the floor and made 8-of-11 3-pointers en route to holding a 71-52 edge at intermission.

Reserve Trenton Hassell's 12-foot jumper with 5:56 remaining in the third quarter gave Minnesota an 88-63 advantage before Lewis and company stormed back.

"We pretty much figured we were going to lose," Lewis said. "I wanted to come out in the second half and make the game look reasonable. "It kept getting closer and closer. Then we finally realized we had a chance."

Chris Wilcox scored on a one-handed jam over Kevin Garnett and Lewis made two free throws, capping a 14-2 run as Seattle took the lead for good, 107-106.

"I was having a hard time comprehending how we played in the first half," Seattle Bob Hill said. "I didn't yell and scream and throw stuff, like I often do. Instead I just talked sense to them. I told them they to put their heads go to the basket and get fouls. They did."

The SuperSonics, who are without leading-scorer Ray Allen, closed the contest with an impressive 51-18 surge and shot 55 percent (10-of-18) in the final period.

"We were riding such a huge wave and we were able to keep that momentum going until the end," Sonics guard Earl Watson said.

Watson netted 25 points and Wilcox had 19 and nine rebounds for Seattle, which shot 49 percent (39-of-79) and held a 35-12 bulge in the final period.

Ricky Davis scored 21 points and Garnett had 20, 12 and nine assists for the Wolves, who shot just 26 percent (4-of-15) in the decisive quarter.

"When we came in the locker room after the game I told everyone it was my fault," Garnett said. "Because as the leader of this team I let the momentum get away from us. I didn't lead properly."
