Randolph guides Grizzlies past Suns
Nov 9, 2010 - 7:28 AM Memphis, TN (Sports Network) - Zach Randolph recorded the fifth 20-20 game of his career, ending with 23 points and 20 rebounds, and Rudy Gay added 22 points and eight boards, as the Memphis Grizzlies topped the Phoenix Suns, 109-99, at FedEx Forum.O.J. Mayo and Mike Conley each finished with 16 points, and Marc Gasol added 10 points and eight rebounds for Memphis, which has won its last two games.
Grant Hill finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds, and Steve Nash added 16 points and 11 assists for the Suns, who had won their previous two games.
Jason Richardson added 17 points, and Hakim Warrick finished with 16 points in the loss.
"I thought we played well, played hard and competed," Suns head coach Alvin Gentry said. "We had that stretch in there where they got separation and when you do that on the road and do it in the fourth quarter, it's tough to recover from."
Memphis' Sam Young hit a three-pointer in the opening seconds of the fourth, and Randolph added a layup with 10:45 left to extend the Grizzlies' lead to 93-75. The Suns then began a 15-4 run -- seven points from Goran Dragic -- to cut the margin to 97-90 with five minutes remaining.
Gay responded with a three-pointer, and, after missed layup attempts by Jared Dudley and Josh Childress, Conley added another deep ball to put Memphis back up by 13 with just under four minutes to go.
Phoenix never got closer than eight the rest of the way.
The Grizzlies led, 28-26, after the first quarter and extended their lead to as many as 10 in the second quarter, but a late surge by the Suns, highlighted by a Warrick dunk at 1:37, cut the margin to 49-48. Mayo hit back-to-back jumpers to extend the lead to five, and, after both teams traded shots in the final seconds of the half, Memphis went into the locker room with a 55-52 advantage.
The Grizzlies scored the first five points of the third, as Mayo's basket gave the hosts a 61-52 advantage. Phoenix later closed to within 78-73, but Memphis went on a 10-0 burst, with Gay's three extending the margin to 15.
Dudley's layup in the final seconds for the Suns made it 88-75 after the quarter.
"We got the win and guys played better," Randolph said. "Our guys stepped up and played great. The rookie (Xavier Henry) had a great game and Rudy (Gay) had a great game. Everybody contributed."
