Heat seek 14th straight road win at Clippers
Jan 12, 2011 - 4:28 PM (Sports Network) - The streaking Miami Heat are bearing down on one of the most impressive records in NBA history as they shoot for their 14th consecutive road win tonight when they visit the Los Angeles Clippers at Staples Center. If the Heat, who will finish a five-game road trip against Denver and Chicago after tonight's contest, can go undefeated on this trek they will match the 1971-72 Lakers for the longest road winning streak in NBA history at 16. A win tonight would match the franchise record for consecutive wins away from South Beach set Nov. 19-Dec. 29, 1996.
Miami has needed overtime to win the first two games of this trip, however, outlasting both Milwaukee and Portland. LeBron James scored a game-high 44 points, including a deep three-pointer with 16.3 seconds remaining in the extra frame on Sunday, as the Heat topped the Trail Blazers by a 107-100 score at the Rose Garden.
Dwyane Wade added 34 points and Chris Bosh finished with 18 points for Miami, which has won an amazing 21 of 22 overall and is now alone atop the Eastern Conference standings at 30-9. James grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds to go along with six assists in the win.
"We have developed habits defensively where we feel like we can get three or four straight stops in a row, and that gives you confidence," Miami coach Erik Spoelstra told the Heat's website.
The Clippers, meanwhile, improved to 2-2 on a five-game homestand Sunday when Eric Gordon scored 25 points and Blake Griffin set a franchise record with his 23rd straight double-double, finishing with 23 points and 12 rebounds, as the Clips defeated the Golden State Warriors, 105-91.
Baron Davis also registered a double-double with 17 points and 11 assists for the Clippers, who earned a 106-93 victory over Denver on Wednesday and have won four of their last six. Al-Farouq Aminu chipped in 12 points off the bench in the win.
Griffin passed Swen Nater for the franchise record for double-doubles. Nater had 22 straight as a member of the Buffalo Braves in 1978.
"It's a process," Griffin said about the Clippers' improved play. "It's all about getting wins. Having Baron (Davis) back is big for us."
These two teams have split their home-and-home season series for three consecutive seasons.
