Magic and Grizzlies meet in Memphis
Jan 31, 2011 - 4:12 PM (Sports Network) - The surging Memphis Grizzlies attempt to climb over the .500 mark on the season tonight when they entertain the Orlando Magic at FedEx Forum.Memphis won for the fifth time in six games in the opener of a brief two-game homestand on Saturday when Zach Randolph extended his franchise record with his 14th straight double-double, posting 24 points and 20 rebounds, as Memphis ran past the Washington Wizards, 107-93.
Darrell Arthur added a career-best 22 points for the Grizzlies, who improved to .500 (24-24) for the first time since the eighth game of the season. Mike Conley tallied 15 points and 12 assists for Memphis, which played for a second straight night without guard O.J. Mayo, who has been suspended 10 games for violating the league's anti-drug policy.
Tony Allen had 15 points, while Marc Gasol contributed 14 with eight rebounds and tied a career-best with five blocks as Memphis coach Lionel Hollins matched Mike Fratello as the team's all-time leader in coaching victories with 95.
"We're definitely better than we were," Randolph, who recorded his ninth career 20/20 game said. "We're not satisfied at all by any means. We're missing O.J. these next 10 games, but we have to keep battling."
The Magic, meanwhile, rebounded from a loss in Chicago to batter lowly Cleveland on Sunday in central Florida. Dwight Howard finished with 20 points to go along with 20 rebounds in that one as Orlando easily handled the Cavaliers, 103-87.
Ryan Anderson added a game-high 23 points and 16 rebounds for Orlando, which has won two of three overall. The Magic shot a subpar 41.3 percent from the field but were helped a 61-35 rebounding margin. J.J. Redick added 17 points on 6-of-10 from the field and both Brandon Bass and Jason Richardson contributed 12 points for the Magic, who played without guard Gilbert Arenas (sore right knee).
"We came out and handled business," Richardson said. "We have to bottle that, what we did tonight, and apply that to the remainder of the season."
Orlando, who beat the Grizzlies 89-72 in the Sunshine State earlier this season, will be attempting to sweep the home-and-home series between the two clubs for the first time since the 2001-02 season.
