Knicks take winning ways to Memphis

Jan 12, 2012 - 3:48 PM (Sports Network) - The New York Knicks just sent a surging Philadelphia team back home with a few things to ponder and will take their four-game winning streak to the road tonight against the Memphis Grizzlies at FedEx Forum.

The Knicks will play two straight and six of their next 10 games away from Madison Square Garden and seem to have turned things around after a 2-4 start to the season. With wins in five of their last seven games, the Knicks cooled off a red-hot Sixers team in last night's 85-79 triumph in the Big Apple.

Carmelo Anthony continued to shine and carried the offensive load with 27 points, nine rebounds, five assists and three steals. He is averaging 26.6 points this season, while Amare Stoudemire finished with 20 points and 10 boards in the win. Stoudemire has recorded back-to-back double-doubles and has scored at least 20 points in five straight games, posting four double-doubles over that span.

"Philly is one of the hottest teams in the NBA right now. For us to hold them to 79 points, that's a big deal," Anthony said.

New York grabbed an early cushion with a 28-15 lead after the first quarter and fended off a pesky Philly squad the rest of the way. Rookie Josh Harrellson tallied 13 points off the bench and Tyson Chandler pulled down 13 rebounds for the Knicks, who shot 41.6 percent and had a 46-37 edge on the glass. New York still managed to win despite giving up 21 points on 24 turnovers.

The Knicks are second in the Atlantic Division, one game behind the 76ers.

Memphis will continue a four-game homestand Thursday and has lost three straight and four of six games, including Tuesday's 100-95 setback versus the Oklahoma City Thunder in the opener of the residency.

Marc Gasol tallied 20 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks, while Mike Conley ended with 15 points and 10 assists for the Grizzlies, who are 2-2 on Beale Street this season and shot 45.9 percent. It was outrebounded, 51-39, and received 16 points from Rudy Gay.

"We need to become stronger and play together to find a way to win," said Gasol.

The Grizzlies are still without big man Zach Randolph because of a knee injury, leaving Gasol responsible for taking on both Stoudemire and Chandler down low tonight. Gasol has scored at least 20 in two of his last three games, and has posted double digits in rebounds in six straight contests. Newcomer Marreese Speights made his first start for the Grizzlies, after coming off the bench in his first two games, and scored 10 points against the Thunder.

Memphis will also host New Orleans and Chicago on the homestand, and lost both meetings with the Knicks a year ago. New York has won four of the past six matchups with the Grizzlies.
