Grizzlies take down Knicks

Jan 13, 2012 - 9:05 AM Memphis, TN (Sports Network) - Rudy Gay scored 26 points on 11-of-16 shooting, as the Grizzlies rolled to a 94-83 victory over the Knicks.

New York not only had its four-game winning streak fall by the wayside, but also saw star forward Carmelo Anthony suffer a sprained right ankle. X-rays were negative.

Memphis, still playing without Zach Randolph (knee), outscored the Knicks, 24-12, in the third quarter after Anthony limped off and cruised the rest of the way to end a three-game skid.

O.J. Mayo netted 18 points, while Marc Gasol logged 10 points and 12 rebounds for the victors.

"We needed this game badly," said Gay. "They're a good team, but we put ourselves in a position where we needed to get this game and we came through.

Anthony scored 14 points before leaving, as did Bill Walker in the loss.

Amare Stoudemire was forced to the bench due to two quick fouls in the first 98 seconds, and the Grizzlies took advantage with 14 points in the paint en route to a 28-19 lead after the first quarter.

Gay's alley-oop dunk in the closing seconds of the half gave Memphis a 49-38 edge heading to the break, then the hosts broke the game open after Anthony limped off.

New York went seven minutes without a field goal at one point, and the Grizzlies' subsequent 16-2 run -- capped by a Gay three-pointer -- provided a 71-47 lead with 1:29 remaining in the frame.

The Knicks shot 5-of-19 in the third and faced a 75-52 deficit entering the fourth. They made the final score as close as it was by hitting six three- pointers in the final frame.

"We didn't get off to a great start. I got in foul trouble and [Anthony] got hurt," Stoudemire said. "It was just one of those nights for us."

Game Notes

Stoudemire only played 19 1/2 minutes and had just six points on 1-of-7 shooting...Iman Shumpert scored 12 points for New York but shot 5-for-20 from the field...Memphis won the battle in the paint, 42-30...Memphis never trailed and led by as many as 25...Tony Allen finished with 12 points and five steals for the Grizzlies, who shot 45 percent from the field.
