Mavs escape Utah with win
Jan 20, 2012 - 7:02 AM Salt Lake City, UT (Sports Network) - Shawn Marion scored 22 points to go along with seven rebounds and Rodrigue Beaubois scored a career-best 17 off the bench, as Dallas held off Utah, 94-91.Dirk Nowitzki added 12 points and Lamar Odom scored 11 for Dallas, which snapped a two-game skid. Jason Kidd dished out 11 assists and Jason Terry added 10 points in the win.
"It's as good a win as we have had all year for a lot of reasons," Mavs head coach Rick Carlisle said.
Al Jefferson posted 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while Paul Millsap recorded a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds for Utah, which saw its three-game winning streak come to an end. C.J. Miles scored 17 points in the loss.
Back and forth they went in the fourth, with Dallas regaining its footing and a four-point edge, 85-81, on back-to-back buckets by Marion and Beaubois. Utah responded and squared the contest at 87-87 on Gordon Hayward's slam with just under three minutes to go.
Terry then drained a momentum-crushing three, and after a Jefferson miss, Marion converted a great pass by Kidd for a 92-87 margin. Dallas iced the contest at the foul line.
"They had some big buckets down the stretch, and we had a couple of times when we couldn't convert and the stress got to us," Miles said.
Dallas rattled off 11 points in succession to take a 13-6 lead early in the first period, but Utah whittled the margin to one, 23-22, on the second of two free throws from Miles. Dallas held a 25-22 lead after 12 minutes of play.
The teams traded blows during the second stanza, as Alec Burks' triple again drew the home team within one, but the margin quickly grew to six on five straight from Beaubois. Dallas kept its foot on the pedal, using an inside-out combo to make the score 52-41. Terry's triple was followed by an effective low post move by Brendan Haywood, who was fouled and made both at the line.
The advantage grew to as many as 12 points before Raja Bell drained a trey just before the horn for a 59-50 game at the half.
Finally the home team made its run early in the third, scoring 10 in a row to creep within one. Bell and Hayward attacked the rim for two straight easy buckets and Jefferson converted a pull-up jumper for a 65-64 game. Earl Watson's three-point play moments later tied the game at 69-69 and Miles' layup then gave the Jazz a two-point game. The game reached a 71-71 stalemate entering the final period.
