Nuggets resume road trip in D.C. vs. Wizards
Jan 20, 2012 - 3:51 PM (Sports Network) - The Denver Nuggets shoot for their third straight win this evening when they visit the lowly Washington Wizards at Verizon Center. After beating Milwaukee on Tuesday, the Nuggets gave the Philadelphia 76ers all they could handle on Wednesday, as Andre Miller scored Denver's final 10 points in the fourth quarter and made the go-ahead jumper late in overtime, lifting his team over the 76ers, 108-104.
"There's a mental toughness that a young team has to progress through and build," Denver head coach George Karl said. "Tonight's game is going to be very helpful to that."
The score was tied at 104 in overtime when Miller made a 16-foot pull-up jumper with 42.9 seconds left to give Denver the lead.
Philadelphia had possession after both teams missed a shot, but Jrue Holiday turned the ball over on a bad pass caused directly by Miller bluff and Arron Afflalo made two foul shots with two seconds remaining to give the Nuggets a four-point edge.
"I just bluffed at the drive to get back to the corner, because the last time I gave up a corner three to Lou Williams," said Miller, whose overtime steal came with 3.7 seconds left and Denver (10-5) up two. "Instead of helping, I just bluffed at (Holiday), he picked up the ball and he had no where else to throw it."
Miller ended with 28 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds off the bench, while Nene tallied 20 points and 14 boards for Denver, which has won four of five.
The Nuggets are in the midst of a five-game stretch away from home, where they are 4-3 this season.
Washington, though, enters on a rare winning note following a surprising 105-102 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday.
John Wall filled the stat sheet with 25 points, eight assists and seven rebounds and Nick Young added 24 points for the Wizards, who overcame a 10- point deficit to put the brakes on a four-game skid and improved to 2-12 on the season.
"Nobody expected it, that's what it was. David bested Goliath," said Young, who scored 19 of his 24 points in the final 17 minutes.
The Wiz will have their hands full tonight, as they have lost three straight and eight of their last nine to the Nuggets.
