Grizzlies keep rolling in win over Pistons
Jan 21, 2012 - 5:02 AM Auburn Hills, MI (Sports Network) - Since All-Star forward Zach Randolph tore his MCL on January 1, the Memphis Grizzlies have been on a roll.Rudy Gay netted 24 points as Memphis won its fifth straight game with a 98-81 drubbing of the Detroit Pistons. Mike Conley added 14 points and 11 assists.
Gay and Conley have been instrumental in Memphis' recent success as the Grizzlies have gone 7-3 since Randolph went down.
Greg Monroe recorded a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds for Detroit, which has lost 10-of-11 and has dropped five consecutive home games.
"Losing sucks," Pistons coach Lawrence Frank said rather frankly. "It's misery."
The Pistons shot just 31.3 percent in the opening quarter while connecting on 2-of-6 from the free-throw line. Gay nailed a three-pointer from the right wing at the buzzer to give Memphis a 22-12 advantage heading into the second quarter.
"I thought we did a great job of coming out focused and doing the little things that allowed us to get off to a good start," said Conley.
Conley's jumper with 1:00 left in the opening half gave Memphis its largest lead of the half, 49-28, before taking a 49-30 advantage into the locker room. Gay netted 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting with four rebounds, while Conley added seven assists to pace the Grizzlies in the first half.
Knight tried bringing the Pistons back in the third as Detroit used a 13-0 run to pull within seven, 64-57, with 4:01 to play in the stanza. Knight had 10 of his 22 points during the rally.
The Grizzlies led, 73-65, after three.
Memphis used a 16-2 run in the fourth quarter to put the game away. Gay punctuated the surge with a three-pointer to make it 95-74 with 4:03 to play.
Game Notes
The Pistons lost their fifth straight home game for the first time since March 16-April 2, 2010...The Grizzlies had not won two straight away from home since January 28-February 2 of last season...Marc Gasol had 17 points and six rebounds for Memphis.
