Gay leads balanced attack as Grizzlies rout Kings

Jan 22, 2012 - 7:56 AM Memphis, TN (Sports Network) - Rudy Gay was one of four Memphis players to eclipse the 20-point mark as the Grizzlies won their sixth straight game with a 128-95 rout of the Sacramento Kings.

Memphis hadn't won six consecutive games since reeling off seven in a row from March 14-26, 2006.

Gay had 23 points with four assists and four steals, Mike Conley netted a season-high 22 points, O.J. Mayo nailed six three-pointers en route to a 22- point night and Marc Gasol added 20 points and 11 rebounds for Memphis, which moved to 8-3 since All-Star forward Zach Randolph went down on January 1 with a torn MCL.

"I thought Mike (Conley) carried us the first half. Then Juice (O.J. Mayo) got going, and then Marc (Gasol) got going and then Rudy (Gay) got going. They just keep bouncing back and forward. We won the rebounding battle, and had 27 assists. There is not a lot more you can say about that game from an overall perspective. It was just a total team win," Memphis head coach Lionel Hollins said.

Jimmer Fredette led the lowly Kings with 20 points, who had their two-game winning streak snapped.

Conley erupted for 15 points in the opening quarter as the Grizzlies took a 34-21 advantage into the second.

Fredette kept the Kings in the contest with 15 second-quarter points, but Mayo had 12 in the period for the Grizzlies as they took a 68-60 lead into the break.

Memphis pulled away in the second half.

The Grizzlies scored the first 12 points of the half to take an 80-60 advantage with 8:39 to go in the third quarter.

Memphis led by as many as 26 in the third and 39 in the fourth before coasting to an easy win.

"I thought our guys tried to play all the way through but didn't have the necessary energy or manpower that we had last night in San Antonio," Kings head coach Keith Smart said about his team, which was playing back-to-back road games.
