Anthony carries Knicks past Hawks
Apr 22, 2012 - 8:50 PM Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Carmelo Anthony scored a game-high 39 points, including the go-ahead bucket, and the New York Knicks held on for a 113-112 win over the Atlanta Hawks on Sunday.Anthony added 10 rebounds, Amare Stoudemire donated 22 points and 12 boards and Baron Davis contributed 13 points to go with 10 assists. Each starter scored in double-digits for the Knicks, who have won three of four.
Marvin Williams led Atlanta with a season-high 29 points as well as 11 rebounds. Jeff Teague supplied 23 points and Joe Johnson had 22 but it was not enough for the Hawks, who saw a three-game winning streak snapped.
Atlanta and New York remain in the fifth and seventh positions, respectively, in the Eastern Conference.
A see-saw fourth quarter began with the Knicks up 91-90. A pair of baskets from Stoudemire pushed their edge to five, but Jannero Pargo and Williams answered by opening a 9-0 Hawks run with back-to-back treys.
Stoudemire stopped the bleeding with his second dunk of the period before J.R. Smith and Davis knocked down their own pair of consecutive triples to make it 106-102 in favor of the visitors.
Williams tied it with two jumpers, Anthony hit two driving layups and completed a three-point play, and Johnson drained a three-pointer in the ensuing minutes.
Trailing 111-109, Johnson stepped up and buried his fourth three of the contest for a brief Atlanta lead, but 10 second later, Anthony cut his dribble with his foot on the right wing line and made the jumper for the game's final points.
"We needed that," Davis said, laughing. "Coming off the loss we had against Cleveland we needed to play with some energy. This team is a great matchup for us because they have quick guards, quick athletic guards, and an athletic frontcourt...It was one of those games that it was going to come down to whoever had the last shot, whether they make it or miss, and that's what happened tonight.
The Hawks officially missed their final three shots of the game from that point forward, but it was one that did not appear in the scorebook that cost them the most.
With 3.4 seconds remaining, Williams accepted an inbounds pass from Johnson. He dribbled into the paint and rose for a dunk, but time expired before the ball left his hands.
"It's a tough one to lose, to put yourself in a position like that and just come up short," Williams said.
Both teams shot well from the field in the first half, 60 percent for New York to 59 percent for Atlanta, but the Hawks made 9-of-11 from beyond the arc en route to a 65-60 halftime advantage.
Game Notes
Atlanta finished 15-of-23 from three-point range, while New York was 12- of-19...Five technical fouls were assessed, and Davis was charged with a flagrant-1 foul in the first quarter...Atlanta turned 18 Knick turnovers into 29 points...New York held a 37-33 rebounding advantage and a 44-36 lead in the paint.
