Spurs seek 10th win of the season against Celtics
Nov 20, 2013 - 3:48 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Antonio Spurs are one of three teams that could reach the 10-win mark when they host the Boston Celtics at the AT&T Center. The Spurs, Indiana Pacers and Portland Trail Blazers all have nine wins and are in action Wednesday night.
San Antonio has won seven in a row and recently handed the Utah Jazz a 91-82 loss last Friday in Salt Lake City. Tony Parker and Boris Diaw scored 22 and 17 points, respectively, and Tim Duncan added 14 and nine rebounds. Manu Ginobili scored nine points and Kawhi Leonard netted just six in the win.
Parker scored 14 points during a decisive fourth quarter and helped the Spurs erase a seven-point deficit. The win gave the Spurs a 9-1 mark, which is tied with Indiana for the best winning percentage in the NBA.
"It took a little longer to get there, but we grinded it out," said Duncan. "They played well. They played hard as we knew they would. It's good to get a win."
The 9-1 record is the best start in franchise history for the Spurs, who will try to stay unbeaten at home (4-0).
San Antonio is loaded with veterans and has played together for quite some time. It will now face a young Boston bunch competing without star point guard Rajon Rondo. Rondo is recovering from a torn ACL and is out indefinitely.
Boston is mired in a four-game losing streak and is set to wrap up a three- game western trip in the Alamo City. The Celtics lost at Minnesota to kick off the trek and just suffered a 109-85 loss at Houston on Tuesday.
Houston opened the game on an 18-1 run and had a 40-18 lead after the first quarter, improving to 8-4 on the season. Courtney Lee had 17 points, Avery Bradley added 11 points and Jared Sullinger scored 10 points for a Celtics team that shot 32.3 percent and made only 7-of-20 3-pointers.
"I want to make sure we don't play like that again," Celtics coach Brad Stevens said. "There are games where things don't go your way. We're letting one end affect the other and you don't do that on good teams."
The Celtics did manage to score 23 points off 20 Houston turnovers.
After visiting San Antonio, the Celtics will return to TD Garden for a matchup with Indiana on Friday.
San Antonio took both meetings with Boston last season and has won three in a row and 23 of the previous 30 contests in this series. The Spurs snapped a five-game home losing streak to the Celtics last Dec. 15, a 103-88 triumph.
