Gortat helps Wizards overcome slumping Bucks in OT
Nov 28, 2013 - 5:06 AM Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Marcin Gortat scored six of his game-high 25 points in overtime and ended 11-of-12 from the field to lead the Washington Wizards to a 100-92 overtime win over the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday night.John Wall scored 19 points with six assists and five steals and Martell Webster netted 18 points for Washington, which won its third consecutive game.
O.J. Mayo, who scored 21 points, hit a 3-pointer that sent the game to overtime. Khris Middleton netted 13 points and Ersan Ilyasova added 12 for Milwaukee, which lost its 10th straight game. It's the Bucks' longest skid since dropping 15 straight, March 4-30, 1996.
Wall opened the scoring in overtime with a jumper from the top of the key and Milwaukee's Luke Ridnour buried a three to give the Bucks a one-point lead with 3:56 left.
That was the final time Milwaukee led as Washington responded with a 7-0 run after two Gortat layups and a 3-pointer from Trevor Ariza to give the Wizards a 97-90 lead with 1:35 remaining in the extra session.
Ilyasova pulled the Bucks within four following a layup with 1:14 left but Nene made two huge offensive rebounds in the final minute to seal it for the visitors.
O.J. Mayo scored 21 points, none bigger than his 3-pointer that sent the game to overtime. Khris Middleton netted 13 points and Ilyasova added 12 points for Milwaukee, which lost its 10th straight game for the first time since 1993.
"It shouldn't have gotten to overtime to be honest, we just made some bad plays down the stretch," said Milwaukee head coach Larry Drew. "You just have to make plays down the stretch in a game that close and we didn't."
After Gortat went on a 7-3 run all by himself to give the Wizards a 78-71 lead with 9:25 to go in the fourth, Milwaukee answered with a 9-0 spurt, which was capped by a Brandon Knight driving layup to put the Bucks in front, 80-78, with 5:54 left in the game.
Later, Milwaukee led 84-81 when Webster hit a three from the corner with 57.2 seconds left. He was fouled by Mayo on the shot, but missed the free throw.
Following a Bucks timeout, Ariza stepped in front of a cross-court pass from Mayo and raced in for an uncontested layup with 39.8 seconds left.
Middleton then missed a 3-point attempt and Ariza made 1-of-2 at the line with 12.7 seconds left to give Washington an 87-84 lead.
Mayo responded after his turnover with a step-back 3-pointer right in front of Nene to tie the game with 6.9 seconds left.
Wall then drove the lane and his floater for the regulation win went long as time expired.
Gortat opened the game with a jumper and Milwaukee then hit its first four shots en route to an 11-0 run with 8:08 to play in the frame.
"Tonight we came out slow and sluggish, and that's unacceptable," Webster said of the Wizard's slow start. "We can't do that."
Washington countered with a 9-0 rally to tie the game as Gortat scored Washington's first six points of the contest.
Washington led 25-23 after one quarter of play and 49-48 heading into halftime.
