Spurs edge Hawks on Duncan's late shot
Dec 3, 2013 - 6:54 AM San Antonio, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - The normally even-keeled and stoic Tim Duncan isn't much for facial expressions.Monday was an exception.
Duncan's go-ahead jumper with 0.4 seconds remaining lifted the San Antonio Spurs to a 102-100 win over the Atlanta Hawks.
Jeff Teague tied the game with a tough step-back 3-pointer over the outstretched arms of Kawhi Leonard with 4.7 seconds left. Following a timeout, Manu Ginobili got the ball at the top of the key. Duncan came off a Marco Belinelli pindown screen from the lower right block, received Ginobili's pass near the right elbow and swished in the go-ahead shot.
The ordinarily expressionless Duncan, who had 23 points and 21 rebounds, displayed his emotions. He emphatically slapped Ginobili's hand as he strutted to halfcourt following the make.
Paul Millsap's potential game-tying shot from the left baseline at the buzzer ricocheted off the side of the backboard.
Tony Parker had 15 points and seven assists for San Antonio, which has won 16 straight home games over the Hawks.
Millsap tallied 15 points and 14 rebounds, Teague added 19 points and seven assists and Al Horford finished with 18 points and seven boards for the Hawks, who haven't defeated the Spurs in San Antonio since Feb. 15, 1997.
"If we play that long and that hard in games, we're going to be OK. San Antonio tests you in a lot of different ways. They test you on both ends of the court. It's good for our guys to compete the way they competed," Atlanta head coach Mike Budenholzer said.
Budenholzer made his return to the Alamo City where he spent nearly 20 years as a video coordinator and assistant coach for the Spurs.
The Spurs led 94-87 with 2:53 left before a Millsap dunk and Teague 3-pointer on back-to-back trips down the floor whittled the gap to 94-92 with 1:48 on the clock.
Ginobili sank a pair of foul shots and Horford answered with a layup for Atlanta before Leonard's short jumper in the paint gave the Spurs a 98-94 spread with 1:01 to go.
Millsap knocked down a step-back triple from the right wing with 16 ticks on the clock and Ginobili hit two more free throws prior to Teague's game-tying trey.
San Antonio led 25-23 after a quarter of play, 50-49 at the break and 73-71 after three in a game that saw 20 lead changes and 17 ties. Neither team led by more than eight.
