Wizards jump out to big lead, hold off Sixers
Jan 21, 2014 - 2:47 AM Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - Bradley Beal had 22 points, nine rebounds and eight assists to lead the Washington Wizards to a 107-99 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday.Marcin Gortat contributed 19 points and 11 rebounds, Kevin Seraphin scored 16 points and John Wall added 14 for the Wizards, who have won four of their last five.
Michael Carter-Williams poured in 31 points to lead Philadelphia despite not playing the final 4 1/2 minutes, even as the Sixers cut a 21-point deficit to eight.
Thaddeus Young added 18 points for the Sixers, who have lost three in a row and seven of their last eight, and Spencer Hawes scored 11 with 16 rebounds.
The Wizards shot 33.3 percent in the fourth quarter and the Sixers scored 13 straight points to pulled within eight with 2 1/2 minutes left.
Carter-Williams scored the first two points but checked out during the surge with the Sixers trailing by 16. Hawes made a 3-pointer and had five points in the run.
"I thought defensively we were decent in the second half," said Sixers coach Brett Brown. "We competed."
The Wizards went 5-of-6 from the foul line after that to stay in front and Trevor Ariza scored the last of his 13 points on a dunk to extend the lead from nine points to 11 in the waning moments.
The Sixers have lost 12 straight road games against the Eastern Conference since beating Washington 109-102 on Nov. 1 in their first road game of the season.
The Wizards beat the Sixers 116-102 in Philadelphia five days later.
The Wizards (20-20) are 3-1 on a five-game homestand that ends Wednesday against Boston, when they will try to move above .500 for the first time since going 2-1 to start the 2009-10 season.
"All I'm going to do is think about that in my sleep then go out there and play the right way, play the way we've been playing -- just go out and play basketball," said Wall. "That's all we can do."
Washington led 29-23 after the first quarter and was up by seven before Carter-Williams scored five straight points at the end of an 8-2 spurt to get the Sixers within one.
The Wizards had a 61-51 lead at halftime and an 86-73 advantage after three quarters.

The Sixers will finish a three-game road trip Wednesday at New York ... Both teams attempted 18 3-pointers. The Wizards made five and the Sixers four ... Washington out-rebounded the Sixers 53-44.
