Grizzlies, Hawks aim to stop identical skids

Feb 8, 2014 - 2:51 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Both the Memphis Grizzlies and Atlanta Hawks are in the midst of two-game losing streaks, so something will have to give Saturday night when the two teams meet at Philips Arena.

The Grizzlies' slide arrived after a six-game winning streak and both losses came at the hands of playoff-bound Western Conference teams.

Memphis fell by nine at Oklahoma City on Monday, then got clobbered by the Dallas Mavericks at home on Wednesday to the tune of 110-96.

The Mavs blew the game open in the third and fourth quarters and Memphis never got closer than 10 with eight minutes to play.

"They burned us," Memphis center Marc Gasol admitted. "They burned us in everything we tried, especially in the fourth."

Zach Randolph paced the Grizzlies with 25 points and nine rebounds, while Courtney Lee contributed 22 points for the Grizz. James Johnson chipped in 17 off the bench, Nick Calathes, who has been starting for the injured Mike Conley, added 16 and Gasol managed 12.

The Grizzlies visit Cleveland on Sunday to complete this short road trip.

The Hawks' recent woes came on the heels of a two-game winning streak.

Atlanta lost at home by four to the Indiana Pacers on Tuesday, then fell the next night in New Orleans to the Pelicans, 105-100.

The Hawks led by six with 7:45 left in the game, but the Pelicans went on a 12-1 run to take the lead. New Orleans extended the lead late and held on for the victory.

Paul Millsap scored 26 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, DeMarre Carroll had 22 points and seven boards and Jeff Teague finished with 11 points and 13 rebounds for the Hawks.

"They made plays. We just didn't make any plays in the fourth quarter. They made some big plays," said Teague. "We just got stagnant on defense. Our intensity on defense just wasn't there. We didn't play with attention to detail in the last couple of plays."

Mike Scott finished with 16 off the bench, followed by 11 from Lou Williams. Atlanta's Kyle Korver extended his NBA record streak to 117 straight games with at least one 3-poimter as he made two for six points.

The Grizzlies beat the Hawks in Memphis on Jan. 12, but the Hawks have taken six of eight overall. Atlanta is 6-1 in its last seven against the Grizzlies as the host.
