Final
Randolph, Grizzlies top Hawks
Feb 9, 2014 - 3:52 AM Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Zach Randolph totaled 20 points and six rebounds to help the Memphis Grizzlies to a 79-76 win over the Atlanta Hawks.Courtney Lee and Nick Calathes added 14 and 10 points, respectively, while the latter had five assists for Memphis, which has won seven of its last nine, but had dropped two in a row coming into Saturday's game.
Paul Millsap finished with 20 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and five steals for the Hawks, who have dropped three straight. DeMarre Carroll contributed 13 points and six boards for the hosts.
Millsap nailed a 3 with 39.2 seconds to play, which capped a 9-2 run for Atlanta to close out the contest. Marc Gasol came up empty on the other end with 15.9 on the clock after the Millsap trey.
On the Hawks' last possession Lou Williams missed a desperation 3 with 1.9 seconds remaining.
Calathes missed a layup with a minute left but gained his rebound and a putback to give Memphis a, 79-73, lead before the Millsap trey.
"It's tough, we're a better offensive team than that," said Millsap. "Our defense was great, we just didn't execute down the stretch at all."
The turning point in the game was the third quarter when the Grizzlies held a 24-11 scoring advantage. Atlanta had 10 turnovers in the quarter, leading to 14 Memphis points.
"Not a clue, not a clue man ... their defense stepped up, but a lot of it was on unforced turnovers," said Millsap.
Memphis traded baskets with the Hawks through the first 3:14 of the third quarter until Lee sparked a 20-7 tear. Mike Miller capped off the run with two 3s and gave the Grizzlies a 61-54 lead heading into the final 12 minutes.
"We watched film at halftime and coach was showing they were getting the ball where they wanted and starting their offense with 19 to 20 seconds on the clock," said Lee. "So they were pushing it up and getting up to areas we weren't. We wanted to get physical. The second half the game got physical. That's how we want to play."
Both teams hit a dry spell in the second quarter as they combined for just 24 points. Atlanta went 7-for-22 from the field, while the Grizzlies shot 5-for-23 from the floor.
The Hawks carried a 43-37 lead into the break.
Atlanta held a 26-12 advantage 7:38 into the game before the Grizzlies closed out the first quarter with a 15-3 tear to pull within 29-27.
