Southeast foes collide as Wiz visit Atlanta

Feb 19, 2014 - 3:06 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - A pair of Southeast Division foes jockeying for position in the playoff race renew their rivalry Wednesday, as the Atlanta Hawks play host to the Washington Wizards at Philips Arena.

The Hawks are just a half-game ahead of Washington for the fifth spot in the Eastern Conference, but a six-game losing streak is doing them no favors.

Atlanta's woes continued with Tuesday's 108-98 loss at Indiana in the finale of a three-game road trip, as Kyle Korver finished 5-of-7 from beyond the arc and netted 19 points to extend his NBA record streak of games with at least one made 3-pointer to 121.

Lou Williams provided 18 points off the bench and reserves Mike Scott and Shelvin Mack combined for 24 points. Cartier Martin had 12 points for the Hawks, who committed 22 turnovers for 35 Indiana points.

"They were making everything it seemed like and we dug ourselves a really big hole," Korver said.

Atlanta All-Star forward Paul Millsap had just seven points to go along with eight rebounds, four assists and two steals.

The Hawks have lost two straight at home, but have a decent 16-9 record as the host this season. They have failed to reach 100 points in each of their last four games and have allowed 100 plus in each of the past three.

Washington has dropped three in a row and five of six games, including Tuesday's 103-93 decision at the hands of the Toronto Raptors.

John Wall led the Wizards with 22 points, Marcin Gortat ended with 18 and 11 rebounds and Nene netted 17 points in defeat. Washington used a 15-1 run late in the game to pull within 99-93 and never got any closer.

Wizards coach Randy Wittman was ejected with 4:39 remaining.

"For some reason when he got ejected we played with a lot of energy," Wizards guard Bradley Beal told NBA.com. "We've got to do that from the start and not just when something big like throwing our coach out happens."

The Wizards have lost three in a row on the road and will try to work on their 12-14 road record against the Hawks. The two Southeast foes have split two meetings this season and will play again March 29 in D.C.

Atlanta has dominated this series of late, winning 20 of the previous 24 encounters between the division rivals. The Wizards are seeking some success at Philips Arena, having lost 11 in a row and 13 of 16 trips there.
