Warriors start another long trek against Pistons

Feb 24, 2014 - 3:22 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Golden State Warriors will begin another lengthy quest across the country when they open a six-game road trip Monday against the Detroit Pistons at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

The Warriors will also make stops in Chicago, New York, Toronto, Indiana and Boston, and have a 16-12 record outside of Oracle Arena. They notched an NBA- best 6-1 mark on their last road trip from Dec. 29 - Jan. 8 and have a record of .500 or better in seven of the past 10 road trips of at least three games.

Golden State has won three in a row overall and seven of its last 10 games, including Saturday's 93-86 victory versus the Brooklyn Nets. Veteran reserve Jermaine O'Neal had a season-high 23 points to go with 13 rebounds, while Draymond Green tallied 18 points and 10 rebounds.

"He's getting an opportunity to put a stamp on what he says. So it's no longer what he says, it's what he's doing," Warriors coach Mark Jackson said. "For a guy at this stage of his career to miss this much of the season and then to be ready to respond when called upon, is a true testament to who he is as a basketball player and what type of character he has as a human being. Just a big-time game for him."

O'Neal is filling in while injured big men Andrew Bogut (shoulder) and David Lee (illness) take time off. Stephen Curry added 17 points, eight assists and five rebounds for the Warriors, who improved to 26-4 this season when holding teams under 100 points.

The Warriors, who are averaging 103.3 ppg, have held 17 opponents to fewer than 90 points this season, their most since 2005-06 (18).

Bogut and Lee are both questionable Monday against the Pistons.

Detroit is allowing 103.2 ppg and has given up 100 or more points in each of the previous four contests. It suffered a 113-102 setback to Dallas on Saturday, as Josh Smith poured in 32 points on 14-of-20 shooting.

Greg Monroe collected 17 points and 17 rebounds, Will Bynum also scored 17 points and Andre Drummond was limited to eight points and three rebounds in less than 20 minutes on the floor. The Pistons trimmed a 13-point deficit (75-62) down to four, but Dallas pulled away late in the fourth quarter.

"Dallas is a good team. We talked earlier about how do you get better probably defensively and offensively, you play together," said Pistons coach John Loyer. "Some of those guys on that team played together for quite a while and with our group, we haven't played together that long. They kind of pick you apart a little bit."

The Mavericks had a 50-39 advantage on the boards, including a 16-9 difference on the offensive end. Still, the Pistons are first in the NBA for most offensive rebounds per game with 14.5 rpg.

If Bogut and Lee are unable to play Monday, Monroe and Drummond should have an easy time inside against O'Neal and Green. Drummond has 41 double-doubles this season and is first in the NBA in offensive boards (5.4 rpg).

The Pistons have a 13-18 record at The Palace this season and will head to the Lone Star State later in the week for matchups with San Antonio and Houston.

Detroit lost to Golden State 113-95 on Nov. 12 and is winless in five straight and six of the past seven games in this series. The Pistons, though, have a 15-3 mark in the previous 18 meetings between the teams at home.
