Knicks keep fighting for playoff spot against Warriors
Mar 30, 2014 - 12:55 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Golden State Warriors will polish off a homestand Sunday night while the New York Knicks continue their road trip with a stop at Oracle Arena. The Warriors are 3-1 thus far on the residency and have won four of their last five overall. The only blemish during that run came against the San Antonio Spurs and there's no shame in that with the streak the Spurs are on at the moment.
On Friday, Stephen Curry scored 33 points to help the Warriors rally past the Memphis Grizzlies, 100-93.
The Warriors trailed 93-86 with 4:00 remaining, but closed the game on a 14-0 run.
With 1:21 to go, Curry shook Grizzlies guard Mike Conley with a crossover before nailing a stepback 3-pointer to give the Warriors a 96-93 lead. After Conley missed a 3 at the other end, Curry knocked down a scooping layup from high off the glass to make it a five-point game.
Klay Thompson sealed the win with a pair of free throws with five seconds remaining.
Thompson finished with 14 points and Marreese Speights scored 15 for the Warriors.
Golden State (45-27) currently sits in sixth place in the Western Conference standings, just one game behind the Portland Trail Blazers, and 1 1/2 ahead of the Phoenix Suns, who sit in seventh. Memphis was one behind Golden State until the loss on Friday.
"Understanding that Memphis is right behind us and these are home games that we've got to have to close out the season - huge win-- sets us up for good momentum going into Sunday and we've just got to come back and be as focused as ever," said Curry.
The Knicks moved to 1-2 on their western swing after a 112-88 thumping Friday night at the hands of the Suns.
Carmelo Anthony paced the Knicks with 21 points and Amar'e Stoudemire contributed 19 in the setback, New York's third loss in its last four games.
"I thought that they were more aggressive than us tonight," said Knicks coach Mike Woodson. "I thought we came out and it was like a back and forth shooting match, but we got into a situation where one pass and the shot was up."
The Knicks, meanwhile, are only 1 1/2 back of Atlanta for eighth place in the Eastern Conference with nine games remaining.
The Knicks still have to visit the Utah Jazz on this trip west.
The Warriors have won two straight over the Knicks, including a matchup in Madison Square Garden on Feb. 28. Golden State has taken 10 of the last 11 meetings between the teams as the host.
