Favors, Jazz stifle 76ers
Dec 28, 2014 - 4:54 AM Salt Lake City, UT (SportsNetwork.com) - Derrick Favors scored 17 points and anchored Utah's best defensive effort of the season, as the Jazz clipped the Philadelphia 76ers 88-71 on Saturday.Favors pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds and blocked five shots and Trey Burke dropped 17 points for the suddenly-hot Jazz, who have won four of five on the heels of a 1-12 stretch.
Gordon Hayward had 15 points, Enes Kanter tallied 10 points and 10 rebounds and Trevor Booker gave 14 points off the bench in Utah's return to EnergySolutions Arena following a six-game road trip.
"Even though they played last night, they showed a lot of fight," Booker said of the Sixers.
Tony Wroten paced Philadelphia with 20 points and Robert Covington scored 17 in defeat. Michael Carter-Williams shot 2-of-20 and committed a game-high six turnovers.
"I credit some of their defense, but we just have a hard time scoring," said Sixers coach Brett Brown.
Philly dug itself a steep hole in the first quarter. Carter-Williams' 1-of-8 shooting in just under nine minutes contributed to the Sixers starters hitting 2-of-14 in the period. Wroten supplied seven points off the bench, but the Jazz still led 25-12 after one.
Utah held its double-digit advantage until the early stages of the third quarter, when the Sixers temporarily flipped the script and responded from a forgettable first half with a 15-2 run that spanned nearly six minutes.
Covington hit a pair of 3s during the spurt, Henry Sims made two shots and Philadelphia owned a 47-46 lead following Jerami Grant's free throw.
Utah countered with seven straight points, however, and led the rest of the way.
The Jazz led 59-55 after the third despite scoring just 15 points in the frame. They got back on track and dropped 29 in the fourth and the Sixers shot 0-for-6 from the arc to result in the lopsided final.
