Lakers start road trip in Salt Lake City

Jan 16, 2015 - 2:45 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - A pair of Western Conference inhabitants riding identical three-game losing streaks clash Friday in Salt Lake City, as the Utah Jazz play host to the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Jazz are 1-4 in their last five games and suffered a 116-105 loss to the NBA-best Golden State Warriors on Tuesday. Derrick Favors paced the Jazz with 22 points and 11 rebounds and Gordon Hayward scored 17 points.

Rudy Gobert had 16 points off the bench and Trey Burke scored 15 for Utah, which shot 48.1 percent from the field and had a 44-31 rebounding advantage. The Warriors, though, shot 50.5 percent and made 13-of-25 3-pointers. They also scored 44 points in the third quarter and 23 points off 17 Utah turnovers.

"They raised their level," Utah coach Quin Snyder said of the Warriors' third stanza. "They hit some shots, they were tough shots, they were contested."

Warriors guard Stephen Curry led all scorers with 27 points and handed out a game-high 11 assists.

Favors is averaging 21.2 points and 10.2 rebounds in his last five games.

The Jazz are 6-12 at home and will open a three-game road trip Sunday against the San Antonio Spurs, Cleveland Cavaliers and Milwaukee Bucks.

Los Angeles will play its next four games on the road against the Jazz, Phoenix Suns, New Orleans Pelicans and Spurs. It is 6-13 as the visitor and 1-6 in the previous seven road assignments.

The Lakers lost their third in a row with Thursday's 109-102 loss to LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in the finale of a four-game homestand. James poured in 36 points for the Cavs, who ended a six-game slide.

Jordan Hill and Kobe Bryant scored 20 and 19 points, respectively, with the latter dishing out a career-best 17 assists. Nick Young posted 14 points off the bench for the Lakers, who made 51.3 percent from the floor and scored only 14 points in the third quarter after recording 61 in the opening half (61-57).

"They made it less comfortable for us in the third quarter. They countered with good defense," Lakers guard Jeremy Lin said.

There were 16 lead changes and 11 ties.

Los Angeles has lost 12 of its last 16 games and will play the first of three matchups with Utah. The two clubs will meet again Feb. 25 and March 19.

The Lakers and Jazz split four games last season, while LA has gone 4-6 in the last 10 regular-season games in Salt Lake City.
