Wiggins leads T-wolves into Charlotte
Jan 19, 2015 - 3:02 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Charlotte Hornets will continue a four-game homestand Monday on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, as they welcome the Minnesota Timberwolves to Time Warner Cable Arena.
The Hornets had a five-game winning streak stopped in the opener of the homestand last Wednesday versus San Antonio, but rebounded with Saturday's 80-71 overtime triumph against Indiana.
Gerald Henderson and Lance Stephenson scored 20 and 13 points, respectively, while Michael Kidd-Gilchrist ended with nine points and 16 rebounds. Bismack Biyombo finished with eight points and 14 boards for Charlotte, which had a 58-56 rebounding advantage and scored 12 of the 15 points in OT.
"We just relentlessly made plays on the defensive end," Henderson said.
Charlotte played without Kemba Walker due to a left knee cyst and has been without Al Jefferson since late December due to a groin injury. Walker is expected to miss Monday's game.
The Hornets have held their last eight opponents under 100 points and will close the homestand Wednesday versus Miami. Charlotte is 9-13 at home.
Minnesota has won two of three games following a 15-game slide and will wrap up a four-game road trip this evening.
The Timberwolves defeated Denver, 113-105, on Saturday and were led by rookie Andrew Wiggins, who scored a career-high 31 points on 11-of-17 shooting and grabbed nine rebounds. Thaddeus Young scored 22 points and Robbie Hummel chipped in 15 points and 13 rebounds.
"Part of his success has been that he's learned how to prepare for games," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said of Wiggins.
The Wolves shot 53.8 percent from the field and 19-of-21 from the foul line.
Minnesota is 4-16 on the road and will host Dallas and New Orleans next.
Charlotte and Minnesota will play the first of two matchups this season and are scheduled to meet again March 22 at Target Center. The two teams split a pair of games last season.
The T-wolves have lost 11 of the previous 15 games in this series.
