Rockets go for season sweep of Nuggets
Mar 19, 2015 - 1:22 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Houston Rockets will try to improve on their two- game winning streak Thursday when they host the Denver Nuggets at the Toyota Center.Houston won the final leg of its road trip Sunday over the Los Angeles Clippers, then came home and knocked off the Orlando Magic, 107-94, Tuesday night.
Donatas Motiejunas netted 23 points to lead six Rockets in double figures as Houston pulled away from the Magic.
James Harden, Trevor Ariza and Josh Smith all scored 17 points for the Rockets, who improved to 15-3 at home since December 31.
"That's the beauty of this team, we had five or six guys in double figures," said Harden. "That means the ball is moving around and guys are getting good shots."
Corey Brewer had 13 points and 12 rebounds off the bench and Patrick Beverley added 12 points with seven assists.
It was tight the whole way until Houston pulled away late.
Victor Oladipo's layup with 4:42 left in the game had the Magic within two, but Beverley and Brewer hit threes around a trio of misses from deep at the other end. Beverley then made a floater and Harden highlighted a 13-0 run with a stepback 3.
The Rockets host the Phoenix Suns on Saturday, then hit the road for two straight.
The Nuggets are on game three of a southern road trip with stops in Miami and Orlando still on the horizon.
After defeating the New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday for the fourth consecutive victory, the streak ended abruptly on Tuesday when the Nuggets lost to the Memphis Grizzlies, 92-81.
Jameer Nelson scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Nuggets, who fell one victory shy of matching a season best. Randy Foye scored 16 points for Denver and Wilson Chandler had 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
They were the only double-figure scorers for Denver, which shot 37 percent from the field against one of the league's superior defensive units.
The Grizzlies led 65-63 going into the fourth quarter and never trailed the rest of the way. The scored was tied with 4:54 remaining but the Grizzlies scored seven points in a row over a two-minute span following a 20-second timeout and were never ahead by fewer than five points the rest of the way.
"Our guys were fighting," Nuggets interim head coach Melvin Hunt said. "I'm proud of the effort."
The Rockets will go for the season sweep over the Nuggets, which hasn't happened since the 2002-03 campaign.
