Jazz, Wolves tip it up at Target Center

(SportsNetwork.com) - With so much hoopla about playoff positioning this time of year, two teams headed for the lottery, the Utah Jazz and Minnesota Timberwolves, tangle at Target Center Monday night.

The Jazz have lost four of their last five, but the T-wolves have lost three straight.

Utah ended a four-game slide on Saturday with a 94-89 home victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Jazz have lost two straight on the road.

Trey Burke scored 22 points off the bench, Rudy Gobert had 13 points and 15 rebounds and the Jazz came from behind to knock off Oklahoma City. Gordon Hayward added 17 points and Trevor Booker scored 12 for the Jazz, who rallied from a 16-point deficit.

They outscored the Thunder by seven points in the second half despite playing Friday night in Denver.

"It was gutsy," Jazz coach Quin Snyder said of the win.

The Jazz, after trailing by 16 in the first half, held the Thunder under 24 percent shooting in the third quarter and took the lead for good with a 6-0 burst capped by Hayward's free throw after Enes Kanter was called for a technical foul.

The Timberwolves are 3-14 in their last 17, but they can barely put a team on the floor. Their losing streak reached three games thanks to a 110-88 road loss to the New Orleans Pelicans Sunday.

Minnesota, which has lost three straight at home, was without Ricky Rubio, Kevin Garnett, Kevin Martin, Nikola Pekovic, Gary Neal and Shabazz Muhammad. Gorgui Dieng left after less than 10 minutes of action versus New Orleans due to a bruised face.

Andrew Wiggins recorded 20 points and fellow rookie Zach LaVine had 17 for Minnesota, with Adreian Payne finishing with 14 points and 11 rebounds in defeat.

The Pelicans never trailed on Sunday and opened the game with the first seven points. New Orleans led 18-6, forced seven turnovers, held the T-wolves to 5- for-17 shooting and closed the period ahead, 25-11.

"We just didn't come out strong in the first quarter," Wiggins said. "We spent the rest of the game trying to come back from the hole we dug ourselves."

The Jazz won two of three this season against the Timberwolves, but Utah is 4-1 in its last five visits to Minnesota.
