Spurs clinch playoff spot with win over Magic

Apr 2, 2015 - 3:24 AM Orlando, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - The defending champion San Antonio Spurs are headed to the playoffs for the 18th consecutive season.

Aron Baynes scored a career-high 18 points and the Spurs clinched a postseason berth with a 103-91 victory over the Orlando Magic on Wednesday.

Manu Ginobili and Marco Belinelli added 13 and 12 points, respectively, for the Spurs, who got 69 points from their bench. Boris Diaw had 11 points and Kawhi Leonard contributed 10 points and seven rebounds.

"It's not that we are switching it on now," Ginobili said. "We tried to get it together early, but we just couldn't, whether it was from injuries or just poor play.

"The main concern right now is just to play well. We've had a lot of ups and downs during the season and in the last few weeks except for (a loss to) New York we've been pretty steady. That's a good sign."

Victor Oladipo ended with 24 points, seven assists and six rebounds for the Magic, who have lost four in a row. Tobias Harris and Nikola Vucevic recorded 18 and 16 points, respectively, with the latter pulling down 11 boards.

"That's why they're the defending World Champs," Oladipo said. "They play well together, their second unit plays well and they're well-coached. It's tough to beat a team like that, but we can learn a lot from them and that's where we're trying to get. We've got to continue to keep getting better."

Trailing 19-16, the Spurs scored the final seven points of the first quarter to take the lead for good.

San Antonio then started the second on a 13-2 run. Belinelli capped the surge with a pair of 3-pointers to make it a 36-21 contest. The Magic got within nine later in the frame, but the Spurs led 52-40 at the half.

The Spurs led by as many as 25 in the second half, cruising to their fifth straight victory.
