Henderson's layup lifts Hornets past Sixers
Apr 5, 2015 - 5:05 AM Charlotte, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Gerald Henderson's go-ahead layup with six seconds left lifted the Charlotte Hornets to a 92-91 win over the Philadelphia 76ers.Jerami Grant staked the Sixers to a 91-90 edge with 2:51 remaining after sinking a pair of free throws.
Neither team scored again until Henderson's layup.
Ish Smith was off on two 3-pointers before Mo Williams was unable to connect from long distance at the other end. Smith was fouled with 10.3 ticks on the clock, but missed both foul shots.
Henderson then drove past Smith from the top of the arc and powered over Furkan Aldemir at the rim for the layup.
"A great drive," Charlotte coach Steve Clifford said of the layup.
Smith's driving left-handed scoop layup at the other end was a bit too strong in the waning seconds.
"Gerald really made the play because he made the sink down to block out Aldemir and get that rebound," Clifford said.
Kemba Walker had 24 points and Williams added 18 points and five assists for the Hornets, who have won three of their last five games. Henderson finished with seven points.
Charlotte is 1 1/2 games behind Boston for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
Smith posted 15 points, nine rebounds and five assists, while Robert Covington supplied 15 points and six boards for Philadelphia, which has dropped five straight contests and seven of its last eight.
"I have no complaints," said Sixers coach Brett Brown.
Charlotte led 19-16 following a quarter of play, but the Sixers outscored the hosts 35-30 in the second and were up 51-49 at the break.
Neither team built a margin larger than three in the third and two Williams free throws in the final seconds of the period helped the Hornets to a 72-69 edge going into the fourth.
Game Notes
Charlotte has won six of the last eight meetings between the teams, including the last four home matchups ... The Hornets were just 1-of-13 from beyond the arc, but scored 22 points off 15 Philadelphia turnovers and sunk 21-of-23 foul shots.
