Grizzlies welcome Pelicans to town

Apr 8, 2015 - 2:03 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Memphis Grizzlies will try to wrestle the Southwest Division title away on Wednesday when they welcome the New Orleans Pelicans to FedExForum.

The Grizzlies trail the Houston Rockets by a game for the division lead and the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference. Memphis is tied with the Los Angeles Clippers for the third seed, just a half-game ahead of the surging San Antonio Spurs.

The Pelicans, by virtue of their home win over the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday, moved into the eighth seed in the conference, a half-game ahead of the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The Grizzlies had a two-game winning streak snapped on Saturday with a 92-83 home loss to the Washington Wizards.

Marc Gasol supplied 18 points and 11 boards and Mike Conley netted 14 with eight assists for the Grizzlies. Zach Randolph grabbed 10 rebounds, but no other Memphis player scored in double figures.

"Tough night for us," Memphis head coach David Joerger said. "We had too many turnovers and we missed a lot of shots."

Washington's Ramon Sessions' pair of free throws gave the Wizards a 71-59 advantage heading into the fourth. Memphis never got closer than seven points the rest of the way.

The Pelicans delivered one of their biggest wins of the season on Tuesday when they knocked off the league-best Warriors, 103-100, at the Smoothie King Center.

Tyreke Evans split a pair of go-ahead free throws with 17 seconds left and that was enough for the victory. Evans attempted a crossover at half court and appeared to trip over his own feet, but a flabbergasted Andre Iguodala was assessed with a foul.

Stephen Curry's floater in the paint at the other end didn't drop and Anthony Davis sunk a pair of foul shots for the three-point cushion.

Curry's right wing 3-pointer at the buzzer rattled in and out. He initially tried to draw a foul on Dante Cunningham, pump faking and leaning into him. No foul was called, however. Curry momentarily lost control of the ball before regaining it, but missed the trey at the horn.

Evans finished with 12 points, nine assists, six rebounds and four steals, while Davis added 29 points, 10 boards and four blocks for the Pelicans, who have won five of their last six games.

"We had a lot of big wins," said Davis. "We don't even consider this a big win, we consider it a good win. That's how we have to look at it. We know we're a high-caliber team."

The Pelicans won the last two meetings and three of the last five encounters in Memphis.
