The Celtics are a half-game ahead of Miami, one game in front of Indiana and one game behind Brooklyn for the No. 7 spot.
Boston opened the trip with Saturday's 117-116 overtime triumph against the Toronto Raptors, as Marcus Smart deposited the game-winning basket at the buzzer after an Isaiah Thomas miss.
"It was for Isaiah. We told everybody to crash," Celtics coach Brad Stevens said of the final play. "Isaiah got to the rim and did his job."
Thomas led Boston with 25 points, Tyler Zeller had 20 points with nine rebounds and Evan Turner chipped in 18 points with 10 assists in the win, Boston's fifth in the last eight games.
The Celtics are 16-22 on the road and will visit Cleveland on Friday.
Detroit is playing out the string and opened a four-game homestand with Saturday's 99-98 win over the Heat.
Reggie Jackson scored 15 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter and handed out 11 assists. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Anthony Tolliver scored 19 and 15 points, respectively, and Andre Drummond added 11 points and 17 rebounds.
"I've been proud of this team a lot of times this year, but maybe no more so than tonight," Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy said.
The Pistons ended a two-game slide and won for the sixth time in nine tries.
Detroit is 17-21 at The Palace and will also host Indiana and Charlotte.
The Pistons and Celtics have split two overtime games this season - both at Boston. Detroit has won eight of the last 11 games in this series.
