Lewis, Turkoglu lead Magic past Raptors
Nov 8, 2007 - 4:33 AM By Brian Herman PA SportsTicker Contributing WriterTORONTO (Ticker) -- Hedo Turkoglu collected 24 points, a career -high 15 rebounds and six assists and Rashard Lewis scored 24 points as the Orlando Magic posted a convincing 105-96 victory over the Toronto Raptors at the Air Canada Centre in the second game of a back-to-back for both teams on Wednesday.
Keith Bogans had 17 points and 11 rebounds and Dwight Howard added 17 and nine for Orlando, which opened the game on a 15-2 run and finished the contest on a 14-4 spurt to secure the victory.
"We got off to a strong start, running extremely well and defending extremely well," Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. "To hold a team like that to 38 percent and outrebound them by 10 was huge. Two guys have double-figure rebounds and neither one of them is Dwight."
Howard picked up his fifth foul early in the fourth quarter and had to sit down for most of the period. The Magic seemed to pick up their rebounding in Howard's absence as Turkoglu led the way by contributing his career-high output en route to Orlando's season-high 51 rebounds.
The Magic, who are on their first road trip of the season, are now 3-0 on the road to start the campaign for the first time in franchise history. They finish the road trip on Friday against the New York Knicks.
"To win like this on the road is big," Bogans said. "You have to steal as many games as you can on the road and, hopefully, we can finish it off with a win Friday in New York."
Raptors forward Andrea Bargnani's 3-pointer at 3:56 of the fourth quarter gave Toronto its first lead at 92-91, but Orlando answered back with its impressive game-ending run, capped by two free throws by Bogans with eight seconds left.
"After Bargnani hit that shot to put them up by one we responded," Van Gundy said. "For the second straight night, we were able to respond to a big run by another team on the road."
But it looked to be an easier time for the Magic, who led by as many as 15 points on a 3-pointer by Turkoglu at the 9:37 mark of the second quarter to make it 38-23.
The Raptors battled back in the second thanks to nine points from All-Star Chris Bosh, who had 26 points and 10 rebounds in the game. His scoring prowess just before halftime gave Orlando a five-point advantage heading into the break.
"It's very tough to have to keep coming back after digging yourself a hole," Bosh said. "We have to do a better job at the start of the game of being attentive on defense and knowing what we want to do on offense and executing."
Turkoglu's 3-pointer at 10:08 of the fourth quarter re-established an 11-point lead for Orlando at 85-74. Turkoglu and Lewis combined to shoot 18-of-24 from the field, including 6-of-12 from the arc.
The Raptors struggled with their shooting for most of the game, missing their first 11 shots from the field and finishing the first half hitting just 34 percent from the floor.
Jameer Nelson had 10 points, seven assists and six rebounds for Orlando, which ended the night shooting 50 percent (38-of-76).
