Roy's big game, Blazers defense key win over Mavericks

Nov 11, 2007 - 5:51 AM PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Brandon Roy has no reservations about building on a solid rookie season.

Roy scored a career-high 32 points and LaMarcus Aldridge added 18, leading the Portland Trail Blazers to a 91-82 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday.

In his NBA Rookie of the Year campaign last season, Roy averaged 16.8 points per game. Since being limited to just seven points in a season-opening loss to San Antonio, the former University of Washington standout has averaged 23.4 since, scoring 22 or more in four of his last five games.

Roy shot 5-of-6 from the arc - including hitting four of his five attempts in the second half - and finished 11-of-17 from the field.

However, it was the Blazers' defense that keyed this victory, holding the high-scoring Mavericks 25 points below their season-scoring average.

Dallas, which entered the game shooting with a 50.4 field goal percentage, shot just 35 percent (29-of-82) from the field.

Perhaps the best example of Portland's defense was the job it did against Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki. After he scored seven points in the opening quarter, last season's MVP could only manage four more points on 1-of-10 shooting.

Travis Outlaw recorded 14 points and 10 rebounds to record his first double-double of the season for the Blazers, who improved to 3-0 at home this season.

Josh Howard had 20 points and seven boards for the Mavericks, who saw their three-game winning streak come to an end.
