Hawks can start run at expense of Knicks

Feb 29, 2008 - 11:17 AM New York (18-39) at Atlanta (23-32) 7:30 pm EST

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Right now, the Atlanta Hawks are on the outside looking in regarding an Eastern Conference playoff berth. They hope to increase their postseason chances on Friday against the New York Knicks.

The Hawks, currently in ninth place, have the luxury of facing the Knicks four times in the next six-plus weeks. New York has the second-worst record in the East.

Atlanta, which is 2-8 in its last 10 games, is coming off a 123-117 home win on Wednesday over Sacramento. Former Kings guard Mike Bibby had 24 points and a season-high 12 assists for the Hawks.

Since acquiring Bibby during the All-Star break, Atlanta is 2-4. The Hawks haven't won consecutive games since winning three straight February 2-6.

The Knicks are coming off their most lopsided win of the season , handing Charlotte a 113-89 defeat Wednesday. New York is 4-3 since ending an eight-game losing streak.

"All the guys have been working and I think their work really paid off," Knicks coach Isiah Thomas said.

Bibby has averaged 24.3 points in his last seven games against New York. Atlanta's Joe Johnson has averaged 32.7 points in his last three games against the Knicks.
