Warriors roll over shorthanded Heat
Mar 8, 2008 - 5:13 AM MIAMI (Ticker) -- The high-scoring Golden State Warriors just had too much firepower for the shorthanded Miami Heat.Stephen Jackson led seven players in double figures with 22 points and Al Harrington added 17 as the Warriors cruised to an easy 134-99 victory over the Miami Heat on Friday.
Monta Ellis scored 16 points and Baron Davis had 15 and 11 assists for the Warriors, who completed their first season sweep of the Heat since the 1993-94 campaign.
"Everything was clicking, and we played an awful good game," Warriors coach Don Nelson said.
Golden State, which leads the league in scoring, had little problem against Miami, which was without leading scorer Dwyane Wade due to "general soreness." The Heat, who also lost forward Dorell Wright to season-ending knee surgery earlier in the week, played only seven players.
"Back in the AAU days was the last time I played with seven guys," Heat guard Chris Quinn said.
Wade, who has been nursing shoulder and knee injuries for most of the season, is considered a game-time decision against Atlanta on Saturday.
"Every time I make a power move, I kind of hurt it a little bit," Wade said.
The Warriors held a one-point lead after the first quarter but opened the second on a 10-0 run - keyed by a pair of 3-pointers from Harrington - to take a 42-31 bulge with 10 minutes left in the first half.
Jackson scored 17 of his points in the first half as Golden State kept Miami at bay for the rest of the half and held a 63-51 lead at the break.
"We needed this win because we let one get away at Charlotte," Jackson said. "We got a chance to get a good lead and rest a little bit to get ready for a tough one (Saturday at Orlando)."
Midway through the third quarter, the Warriors extended their lead with an 11-2 run to take an 82-61 advantage with 5:28 left in the quarter.
Golden State used another 8-0 spurt late in the quarter to take a commanding 98-70 lead with 40 seconds left in the third. Ellis had 14 points in the quarter, as the Warriors had already topped the 100-point plateau for the 25th straight game with a 100-73 bulge entering the fourth.
The Warriors, who were coming off a 118-109 loss at Charlotte on Wednesday, still have not lost back-to-back games since dropping consecutive contests on January 2 and 4.
The Warriors shot 13-of-30 from the arc - led by Harrington's 5-of-7 - and also have lost at least two games in a row twice, the only other instance coming when the team started the season 0-6.
"Our biggest thing is that we don't want to lose two games in a row," Harrington said. "Since the beginning of the season, we have been doing a great job of that."
Quinn and Marcus Banks scored 20 points apiece to pace Miami, which allowed Golden State to shoot 54 percent (53-of-98) from the field.
The 134 points also was the most the Heat have allowed this season, eclipsing the 126 Chicago scored against Miami on January 16.
"I thought our guys came with the right attitude," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "We just got absolutely outplayed by a better team."
