Ellis scores career-high 31 points in Warriors' win
Nov 19, 2006 - 6:43 AM OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- Monta Ellis turned Baron Davis' injury into a positive of his own.Ellis scored a career-high 31 points and matched a career best with seven assists as the Golden State Warriors posted their fifth straight win, a 107-95 victory over the Seattle SuperSonics.
Mickael Pietrus had 19 points and 12 rebounds and Jason Richardson added 18 for the Warriors, who improved to 5-0 on their seven-game homestand.
In Golden State's previous four wins, Davis has averaged 28.5 points and 12 assists, including an outing of 36 points and a career-high 18 assists in a 117-105 win over Sacramento on Thursday.
However, on Saturday, Davis collected just eight points and a season-low two assists in 18 minutes due to a strained rib muscle in his right side.
"That's really part of my job. I'm the point guard and that's just the role I had to play," Ellis said. "He went out and that's just the role I had to play."
Ellis stepped up huge in the role of leader, making 12-of-19 shots and grabbing a season-high seven rebounds.
"Monta stepped up huge for us tonight in Baron's absence," Warriors coach Don Nelson said. "He got a career high tonight with his 31 points and he really took charge of the game."
"(Ellis) did a good job," Richardson said. "It was important. I'm kind of still trying to work my way back into it. Baron went down tonight and (Ellis) basically carried the team. He did a lot of things. He shared the ball, he rebounded. He had a great game tonight."
The Warriors had their 55-42 halftime lead reduced to 70-65 on a three-point play by Ray Allen with 3:21 left in the third quarter. But Ellis sandwiched two baskets around a layup by Mike Dunleavy for a 76-65 advantage with 49 seconds remaining in the frame.
The Sonics got no closer than five points from thereafter.
Allen scored 34 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Rashard Lewis added 17 for Seattle, which has dropped its last three games.
"There are always good things to pull from, but defensively we need to go out and get stops," Allen said. "Tonight they stopped us and we could not make a stop."
No one has shouted yet.
