Roy, Blake help Blazers upend Magic
Nov 11, 2008 - 4:06 AM ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Brandon Roy scored 27 points and Steve Blake added 20 as the Portland Trail Blazers posted a 106-99 victory over the Orlando Magic on Monday.Rookie Rudy Fernandez and LaMarcus Aldridge had 16 points apiece for the Blazers, who snapped a three-game road losing streak. Travis Outlaw added 20 points off the bench for Portland, which outscored Orlando's reserves, 40-12.
Hedo Turkoglu had 35 points for the Magic, who had their four-game winning streak snapped. The Blazers overcame a huge night from Dwight Howard, who poured in 29 points and grabbed a season-high 18 rebounds.
The Magic, who shot 45 percent from the floor (32-of-71), finished off their homestand at 4-1.
Roy had great things to say about his team's bench effort.
"Our bench is big for us," Roy said. "I tell (Outlaw) every day that a good game needs to be standard for him. He is stroking the ball really well, and so is (Fernandez). He plays aggressive and takes big shots."
Meanwhile, Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy was upset with the lack of production from his reserves.
"(Keith) Bogans had a good game, but the others played a total of 37 minutes and only got two shots off. (The bench) is something we have to look at."
It was a back-and-forth contest that featured 14 lead changes and 10 ties, but Portland took over in the fourth.
The Blazers entered the final period down, 73-72, but went on an 11-0 run - capped by a 3-pointer from Fernandez with 8:11 left in the fourth.
"Tonight we were talking about having more of a sense of urgency in the fourth quarter, and we came through on it," Roy said.
"We stayed together," he said. "We were a little nervous, but nobody panicked. We shut down their runs, and everybody stepped up."
While Portland was hot, the Magic were stone cold.
Orlando had four missed shots and two turnovers in their first six possessions of the quarter. Portland then hit 15-of-18 from the free-throw line down the stretch to seal the win.
Blake hit four straight free throws to put the Blazers up, 98-89, with a minute to play. Turkoglu drew the Magic to within six with a 3-pointer on the next possession, but that was as close as they would get.
"After shots didn't fall we got away from our game," Van Gundy said. "We had no ball movement, and everyone was forcing shots."
Howard scored 23 points in the first half, but Orlando trailed, 55-54.
