Mayo dominating for Memphis despite team struggles

Dec 3, 2008 - 2:44 PM Memphis (4-13) at Atlanta (10-6) 7:00 p.m. EST

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- The Memphis Grizzlies dismal start to the season has not stopped rookie O.J. Mayo from making an immediate impact on the NBA.

Mayo tries to help the Grizzlies snap a six-game losing streak when they visit the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday.

The 21-year-old guard, who was taken third by Minnesota and later traded to Memphis during June's draft, is off to an outstanding start and was named Western Conference Rookie of the Month on Monday.

He leads all rookies in scoring at 21.9 points per game and owns the highest scoring average for a first-year player since Allen Iverson averaged 23.4 points in 1996-97.

Despite Mayo's presence, the Grizzlies have earned only three wins this season, their last being a 109-94 victory over the Sacramento Kings on November 18.

Mayo had 30 points on Saturday, but it was not enough to lift Memphis past the last-place Oklahoma City Thunder, whose 111-103 triumph marked just their second win this season.

The Hawks have alternated losses and wins in their last four games and are coming off a 102-98 triumph over the Washington Wizards on Saturday.
