Hawks visit Spurs looking to snap road skid
Dec 10, 2008 - 11:35 AM Atlanta (12-8) at San Antonio (12-8), 8:30pm ESTSAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- A few days ago, the Atlanta Hawks took to the road for a trip into the heart of Texas for three games against tough Western Conference opponents. So far, the trip hasn't been pleasant.
After consecutive losses to the Dallas Mavericks and Houston Rockets, the Hawks will try to salvage one win in the Lone Star State as they visit the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday.
After a surprising 6-0 start to the 2008-09 campaign, the Hawks have gone just 6-8 since then as the Southeast Division has tightened around them. The Orlando Magic have taken control of the division, while the Miami Heat have won four in a row to pull to within a game of Atlanta for second place.
However, the Hawks face a Spurs squad that might be a bit bleary-eyed after playing a lengthy game with the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday. They ended up winning the game, but it took two overtime periods. Tim Duncan collected 32 points and 14 boards and Tony Parker added 29 points and 10 assists.
The Spurs, after a sluggish start to the season, have won nine of 11 to climb back toward "contender" status. A lot of that has to do with the health of Parker and Manu Ginobili, who both have made healthy recoveries from ankle injuries that hobbled them for much of the early part of the season.
