McHale goes for first win against sizzling Spurs

Dec 12, 2008 - 11:19 AM San Antonio (13-8) at Minnesota (14-7) 8:00 p.m. EST

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Teams heading in opposite directions come together Friday when the Minnesota Timberwolves host the San Antonio Spurs.

San Antonio is in search of a season-high fifth straight win, coming off a 95-89 win against Atlanta on Wednesday, while Minnesota hopes to snap a seven-game losing streak.

Manu Ginobili had a season-high 27 points off the bench and the Spurs held off a late rally by the Hawks. Tim Duncan added his fifth straight double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds.

The Spurs have been on an offensive role of late, averaging 114.75 points a game during their winning streak.

Timberwolves coach Kevin McHale's second game on the bench was a historic one, but it was Denver's Carmelo Anthony setting the record. The Nuggets forward scored 33 points in the third quarter to lead Denver past Minnesota, 116-105, the second straight loss since McHale took over for Randy Wittman.

Al Jefferson and Randy Foye led six players in double figures with 26 points apiece, but Minnesota allowed 72 second-half points to blow a 12-point halftime lead.

The Timberwolves dropped their only contest with the Spur, 129-125, in double overtime on November 5. Tony Parker scored a career-high 55 points in the win.
