Timberwolves eye rare three-game winning streak

Jan 6, 2009 - 3:31 PM Minnesota (8-25) at Memphis (11-23) 8:00 p.m. EST

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- The Minnesota Timberwolves shoot for their first three-game winning streak in nearly two years when they host the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday.

Minnesota has been riding the hot play of Al Jefferson, who was named the Western Conference Player of the Week on Monday.

Jefferson averaged 27.3 points and 12.3 rebounds in leading the Timberwolves to a 3-1 mark last week.

The fifth-year forward recorded 18 points and 14 rebounds in a 102-92 win over Chicago on Saturday. Prior to that, Jefferson torched Golden State for 32 points and 10 rebounds in a 115-108 win on Friday.

Jefferson hopes to help Minnesota to its first three-game winning streak since January 12-15, 2007. They may have a good shot against the Grizzlies - a franchise as downtrodden as the Timberwolves.

In fact, only two teams have worst winning percentages than Minnesota since the start of the 2006-07 season - Memphis (55-143) and Oklahoma City.

The Grizzlies snapped a four-game skid with a 102-82 win over Dallas on Sunday. Rookie O.J. Mayo scored 18 of his 21 points in the second half.
