Streaking 76ers blitz Trail Blazers

Jan 15, 2009 - 5:35 AM PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- Andre Iguodala scored a season-high 29 points and the Philadelphia 76ers got off to a fast start en route to a 100-79 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday.

Iguodala was 10-of-17 from the field, including 4-of-6 from the arc for the 76ers, who won their fifth straight while handing the Trail Blazers their most lopsided loss of the season.

Philadelphia led 55-33 at the half, but Portland climbed back in the third, going on an 11-0 run to open the quarter and cutting the lead to 69-59 entering the fourth.

"The first twenty four minutes, they had the energy, the scrap and the fight to play this game," Portland coach Nate McMillan said. "We showed some fight in the third but in the fourth quarter, they out scraped us again. We just didn't have it tonight."

But the Blazers ran out of gas and the 76ers regained control behind Iguodala and Thaddeus Young, who hit a couple of big 3-pointers to end any thoughts of a comeback for Portland.

"We had a deep hole to dig ourselves out of," McMillan said. "We played the third quarter the way we needed to start the game. We were able to fight back and we missed a couple shots. They made buckets and was able to keep the momentum going."

An early 12-2 run gave the 76ers an 18-8 lead and they did just about whatever they wanted in the first half. Andre Miller began the run with a three-point play. That was followed by a basket by Willie Green and a three by Andre Iguodala, who scored the final seven points in the burst.

"It was a good game for us," Philadelphia interim coach Tony DiLeo said. "We did a very good job executing our plan. We got out defensively, we got a lot of deflections, a lot of steals which led us to fast break points. We knew that they would try to make a run at us and they did in the third quarter. But we withstood it and we came back and made a run at them. That is a sign when a team has momentum, we can stop it and come back to regain that momentum."

Iguodala scored 14 points in the first to help Philadelphia build a 31-15 lead.

"We got some stops and that's how the offense got going. We've just been clicking," Iguodala said. "The guys did a good job getting some open threes, swinging the ball. We got steals, got easy baskets and got to the foul line. We've been playing well the last twenty games or so. Our defense has been a lot better. We've gotten stops when we've needed to."

Lou Williams had 14 points off the bench for the Sixers, including a 3-pointer to open the second quarter and extend the lead to 34-15. Iguodala closed the half with a three with 1.9 to go give the Sixers a 55-33 lead at the half.

Philadelphia entered the game 29th in the league in 3-point shooting at 31 percent, but hit 8-of-17 in the first half and 11-of-23 overall.

Brandon Roy scored 27 points and LaMarcus Aldridge added 15 for Portland, which had its three-game winning streak snapped.
